Something's up with the women who live in the house on the hill. Something strange. Even dangerous. Do you want to find out what it is?
THE BEGINNING
Hey, it's Kaley, the writer of this play. I began Homestead as a thought experiment in a playwriting class at the Department of Dramatic Writing at NYU Tisch in 2023.
The first lines...
The experiment went like this: what if, in the apocalyptic future, there were two women with an ambiguous relationship in a cabin, and a man with unknown intentions knocked on their door? What if they all had secrets? What if their lives were about to change forever? Three years and several drafts later, I want to show you what happens when all that goes down.
A beloved former draft
Appalachia, Future. Meet SAOIRSE and RUTH. A hardcore survivor, Saoirse takes no prisoners -- but she has a soft spot for Ruth, a girl she saved from Eaters thirteen years ago. Ruth is smart, inquisitive, and courageous, but a decade of being raised by Saorise does odd things to the brain. Now Saoirse and Ruth live in a state of pastoral Edenism in their cabin. They're content to live off the land and stay off the grid -- until the grid comes to them in the form of a man, knocking on their door.
Enter GRADY. A smooth-talking, handsome all 'Merican boy who lost his way on the Appalachian trail trying to get to the New Communities of the Federation on the west coast. He's immediately taken by Ruth and sees a kind of match in Saoirse. Naturally, all hell's about to break loose.

After an electric reading in June 2025 with truly stellar actors who elevated the material from good to great -- all of whom are reprising their roles for this production -- I thought, why not produce it? We're at a critical time for independent artists in the United States as the administration slashes public funding and the number of private opportunities shrinks. So here we are, asking for money so we can keep independent art alive.

THE PRODUCTION

We can't make a show without renting a theater and getting people paid. Our primary cost is labor: we want to pay everyone equitably and fairly on this project, and that includes our actors, director, stage manager, intimacy/fight coordinator, and designers. Our theater costs $1500 for the weekend. And of course, we need to make it all look good.

CONCLUSION
This production is not just for me -- it's for our brilliant players Nneka, Alinca, and Martin, our gifted director Kate, our incredible producer Ava, and everyone else giving their time to this show. It's a labor of love, but, like Saoirse says, I do it anyway, 'cause that's what love is. It make me sick. But that's love.

About This Team
Kaley Mamo is a screenwriter, playwright, and filmmaker who writes drama stories about complicated women and people who make mistakes. She was one of seven screenwriters chosen for the 2025 Black List Writers Lab for her script SHELLS. Her medical horror script, THE WELL, was a 2024 Academy Nicholl Semifinalist and was under option at Talon Entertainment (OH, CANADA, BOOKWORM). Her plays have been produced in the Irvington Theater Arts Incubator Short Play Festival, the Queens Short Play Festival, Break a Leg Productions Earth Day Expo, and Coastal Creative’s End of the World Play Festival, in addition to earning her Final Round consideration at Berkeley Repertory’s Ground Floor Summer Residency. Kate Purdum is a theatre director and freelance arts writer. She is also a dramaturg, producer, stage manager, and, on occasion, sound designer. Together with Celia Krefter, she devises, directs, and designs original performance works, including HOW TO BE NORMAL AND REGULAR (Movement Research, Object Collection/Collapsable Hole, The Tank), MUDPIT (Movement Lab @ Barnard College), and Everything Changes, Nothing is Lost (Brick Aux). Recent credits include: Director, The Appeal (Barnard College); Assistant Director, Atlas Drugged: Tools for Tomorrow (The Builders Association/NYU Skirball); Assistant Director, HOUSECONCERT (Object Collection/The Brick); Stage Manager, Suppose Beautiful Madeline Harvey, (Object Collection/La MaMa); Associate Producer, Evelyn Brown, A Diary (La MaMa); Associate Producer, Redemption Story (Associates Theatre Ensemble). Ava Skolnik is producing on behalf of Talon Entertainment (BOOKWORM, OH, CANADA), where she currently serves as Chief of Staff. Based in Florida, Ava graduated from the University of South Florida in May 2025 with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and a concentration in Sports and Entertainment Management. Ava began her career at Talon Entertainment as an intern in the summer of 2023 and has since grown into a leadership role. While primarily experienced in the film world, her producing credits include the short film Every Single Day As a Parent, which premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2025, as well as serving as Production Coordinator on the upcoming feature Atonement, starring Kenneth Branagh, Boyd Holbrook, and Hiam Abbass. In theatre, Ava produced the black box production The End of the World, a vignette-style piece featuring four original 15-minute works.
