The Story
Small-town Texas. August and hot.

Jess stumbles into a job as a body transporter for Ol' Bill's Morgue & Mo-rning (original songs included in all funeral services).

Over the course of a day, Jess encounters a colorful cast of Texas characters: a plant stealing neighbor, a no bullshit hospice nurse, a wise beyond his years six-year-old and various people whose lives intersect with death every day. Each brief, strange encounter brings Jess one step closer to being able to confront a loss of her own.
HONEY BUN is a dark comedy about grief, mortality, and the unexpected people who help us find our way. Blending Texas sized humor and emotional depth, the film explores the winding, occasionally funny, road toward accepting loss.

Here's why we're making this film:
In 2024, we (Malena and Kristen) went to SXSW for the first time on gifted passes. Our favorite event of the conference was the TEXAS SHORTS.
That night (at a truly bizarre after-party where everyone had to drunkenly tiptoe around a giant indoor pool that occupied most of the floor space) we made each other a promise: we'd make our own Texas short. Kristen would direct. Malena would write and perform.
Now we're making good on that promise!
This August, we're shooting our short film, HONEY BUN, in Austin with the support of our incredible producers, Vicky Boone (casting director of Hit Man and Tree of Life,) and Liz Frankel (dramaturg, creative producer and founder of the Alley All New Festival.)
HONEY BUN is the kind of story we love to tell: one with a big, tender heart and a dark, offbeat sense of humor. It's also a love letter to Texas, especially to the strange, unexpected people who offer guidance when we need it most.
To bring the film to life, we're raising $18,750 We'd be honored if you'd consider supporting the project. Your contribution will go directly towards paying Texas artists and creating this film the right way.
We can't wait to share this story with you!
