Now, more than ever, we need stories told from the female gaze. The story of Marigold is about a young woman making a life from scratch. She overcomes great odds and decides to defy the patriarchal Hutterite system and seek the freedom of the outside world.

Story
Mission Statement
Hutterite explores many important and difficult conversations from women's rights and equality to exploring sexuality in an oppressive religious system. The story sheds a light on the power of giving women access to an education and how the effects of it can be seen for generations to come.About The Project
Hutterite
A scripted short film by Rebecca Flinn
Inspired by her mother’s own escape from a Hutterite commune
"Now more than ever we need films that are told from the female gaze."
Hutterite is a rare peek behind the curtain of an Anabaptist commune in the 1960’s & 1970’s. This painful and challenging story is told through the eyes of Marigold, a tenacious young Hutterite woman with the impossible dream of getting an education. The film explores Marigold’s oppression and heartache being trapped in a Patriarchal system, her brother’s budding and controversial sexuality, and the bourgeoning wave of feminism that was calling her into the outside world.
Hutterite is an uplifting story of a woman who overcomes great odds. The themes of the film are a mirror to held up to society in a time where funding for education is being cut and access to important resources for women are being taken away. Even though this story takes place in a Hutterite Colony in the 1960’s & 1970’s the story has echoes to the current political landscape, and a second resurgence of the rise of feminism. Since I grew up around this culture I am called to tell this story that has inspired me every day of my life.
