The Story
I realized why I was here: I was here to take care of my brother

The film tells the lifelong story of a sister who became her Down syndrome brother's sole caregiver at the age of 17 after their mother died of cancer. It's a gripping story and, at times, difficult to hear - especially when she recounts losing her eye after her stepbrother threw a rock through a window, sending shattered glass into her face.
I first met Lynn when I stayed at her Airbnb in Los Angeles in 2018. I was instantly drawn to her kindness and the deep care she showed for her brother, Bob. Over the years, we kept in touch and became close friends.

When Lynn mentioned she was writing a book about her and Bob’s life, I immediately jumped at the idea of documenting their story in a visual form.
In the summer of 2024, I flew to Los Angeles and spent several days filming Lynn and Bob as they went about their daily routines - including the highlight of Bob’s day: visiting the ice cream shop.
Spending that time with Bob, I was moved by how happy he was and how much patience he showed, even as we packed our days with filming, walks in the park, trips to the beach and garden, playing soccer, and visits to the playground. The days were long, but Bob never stopped offering his bright smile.
WHY WE NEED YOU
Although I independently funded and filmed the full documentary, it wasn’t until I returned to the East Coast and completed post-production that I realized something essential was missing.
To truly honor Lynn and Bob’s story, we need to recreate pivotal scenes from their past - the trauma, abuse, homelessness, moments that shaped their lives. Without revealing the full depth of their struggle, their journey of resilience and unconditional love would feel incomplete.
I also realized I couldn’t do this next part alone; I need a proper crew and talented actors - paid fair wages - and that’s how the idea for crowdfunding was born.
With your support, we can bring Lynn and Bob’s remarkable story to life, and share with the world the resilience, heartbreak, and their unwavering bond.
We're asking for $15,800 to help cover production costs - including fair wages for our talented cast and crew, along with location fees and essential 1970s props. Your support will help us tell this story authentically.
WHY IS THIS FILM IMPORTANT?
Despite some very dark details, I felt this story needed to be heard. Because:
- This film will have disability representation — we’re proud to cast two actors with Down syndrome, giving voice and visibility to a community rarely seen in leading roles.
- It highlights the power of resilience, showing that survival and even growth are possible after trauma.
- Seeing how someone endured and found ways to cope can give others hope for their own healing.
- Trauma can be difficult to talk about, but hearing someone else’s journey can break the silence and encourage others to open up.
- It may help friends, family, or caregivers better understand how to support loved ones.
I hope this film will inspire anyone who feels alone in their battles, showing that with determination, hope and happiness are possible.

SUMMARY OF LYNN AND BOB'S STORY
The story begins in the present, with Lynn (the sister) and her brother Bob—now in their 60s—living a peaceful, happy life.
As Lynn begins to share her memories, we shift into the past. We meet younger versions of Lynn and Bob and see just how protective Lynn is, standing up to bullies and navigating a very difficult childhood. There’s a powerful flashback: before Lynn and Bob were born - when mom was living with her first husband, Jay. In a harrowing sequence set on an abandoned island in Florida, Jay shoots her and tries to strangle her, leaving her to die. She escapes, but the trauma stays with her. This scene is short but crucial—it adds depth to her character and helps explain her later fears.
The second act focuses on Lynn at age 13–15, when her mother is diagnosed with lung cancer. With her father largely absent due to drinking and a strained relationship with her mother, Lynn is forced to step in and care for both her mom and her brother, Bob. This act is deeply emotional as we see the toll of illness, both physical and emotional. It ends with a heartbreaking moment: as paramedics take the mother away, she tells Lynn she loves her—for the first and last time.
In the third act, Lynn is 17. After her mother’s death, she goes to live with her father, where she faces abuse from her stepmother and stepbrothers. One attacks her with a knife and baseball bat. Another throws a rock through a window, blinding her in one eye. Eventually, Lynn takes Bob and leaves—they live out of a car. Homeless.
The final scene from the past is Lynn at her mother’s grave, reading a poem she never got to share. We then return to present-day Lynn and Bob to close the story.
