The Story

Throughout the course of the story, "I'm Good!" explores the challenges of balancing personal and professional life in the face of adversity. Our main character grapples with his emotional turmoil, desperately concealing the recent breakup with his boyfriend, all while trying to maintain his composure and professionalism to book his big break.
Theme: This film humorously addresses a culture of conformity in which almost all of us participate on a daily basis. Why would anyone want to know more than that we are simply… good? And why take the time to explain how we truly are when being “good” is so universally accepted? But what happens when you are bombarded with the deceptively simple yet profoundly introspective question? Do you answer honestly?
Hand in hand with our leading character’s positive facade is the underlying theme of performativity. This goes beyond simply answering, “I’m good.” Every character displays a performance of some sort throughout the film; this is why, when writing, I decided to name characters such as “Eclectic Director,” “Loser Writer,” and “Underpaid Waitress.”

This story is darkly hilarious, Hollyweird, and heartbreaking. It is also undeniably and authentically queer. But it does not have to be; the story would be just as engaging if the leading character was straight. As a queer filmmaker (and human being), I believe it is important to increase representation of queer characters in which they are not inherently tied to their sexuality. It does not define them. Queer people’s stories can simply be stories.
