In the depths of the Colombian Amazon, 13-year-old Nicol gazes at the stars and dreams of becoming an astronomer. “Space is like the jungle,” she says, “full of mysteries and things to discover.” Born into the Cubeo Indigenous community, Nicol was raised in Camuti Cuduyari, a remote riverside village accessible only by boat. Her family survives through fishing and subsistence farming. Like many Indigenous children, Nicol had to leave her community to go to school in the town of Mitú—an area shaped by conflict and trauma, where 27 ethnic groups coexist.

The cultural shock of this move poses a significant challenge for many children, contributing to high rates of disconnection, depression, and suicide among youth in the area. This has resulted in the highest youth suicide rate in Colombia. Nicol is trying to navigate life helping her friends overcome depression while also advancing her studies in the school.
El choque cultural de este movimiento plantea un desafío significativo para muchos niños, contribuyendo a altas tasas de desconexión, depresión y suicidio entre los jóvenes de la zona. Esto ha resultado en la tasa de suicidio infantil y juvenil más alta en Colombia. Nicol está tratando de navegar la vida ayudando a sus amigos mientras que también avanza en sus estudios.

Nearly 600 kilometers away, in the urban slums of Soacha outside Bogotá, 21-year-old Mariana has also been reaching for the stars—literally. Growing up in an environment marked by displacement and limited access to resources, she found hope in the night sky, teaching herself about astronomy from her rooftop. Mariana started attending a community foundation at 13, initially focused on preventing teenage pregnancy. There, her leadership blossomed as she advocated for education in her community. At 16, she was selected for the She Is Astronaut program and traveled to NASA in 2020.
A casi 600 kilómetros de distancia, en Soacha, a las afueras de Bogotá, Mariana, de 21 años, también ha estado alcanzando las estrellas, literalmente. Creciendo en un ambiente marcado por el desplazamiento y la escasez de recursos, encontró esperanza en el cielo nocturno, aprendiendo por sí misma sobre astronomía desde la terraza de su casa. A los 13 años comenzó a asistir a una fundación comunitaria inicialmente enfocada en prevenir el embarazo adolescente. Allí, su liderazgo floreció mientras abogaba por la educación en su comunidad. A los 16 años, fue seleccionada para el programa She is Astronauta y viajó a la NASA en 2020.

Four years later, in 2024, Nicol was selected for the same program, becoming the first Indigenous girl from her region to go to NASA. Despite their differences in age, geography, and cultural background, both girls share a powerful connection: a profound sense of wonder, perseverance, and the belief that science can be a tool for healing and social change.
During their time at NASA, they received hands-on training in STEM, met astronauts, and were mentored by Latin American professionals leading space missions. These experiences were life-changing. For Nicol, it planted a seed of hope and responsibility. At her young age, she has begun working with youth collectives in Mitú, using her story to inspire other Indigenous children and support mental health initiatives in her community. She is determined to use science to combat suicidal ideation among children in her community.
Cuatro años después, en 2024, Nicol fue seleccionada para el mismo programa, convirtiéndose en la primera niña indígena de su región en ir a la NASA. A pesar de sus diferencias de edad, geografía y antecedentes culturales, ambas niñas comparten una conexión poderosa: Un profundo sentido de asombro, perseverancia y la creencia de que la ciencia puede ser una herramienta para la sanación y el cambio social.
Durante su tiempo en la NASA, recibieron capacitación práctica en STEM, conocieron astronautas y fueron guiados por profesionales latinoamericanos que lideraban misiones espaciales. Esta experiencia cambió sus vidas. Para Nicol, sembró una semilla de esperanza y responsabilidad. Mariana, now a university student, is pursuing degrees in industrial engineering and mathematics, with plans to continue into aerospace studies. She also shares her astronomy knowledge to children in her community as a Boy Scout leader and is developing an app to help amateur astronomers stay informed about celestial events. Both girls actively use what they’ve learned to uplift others, demonstrating that the impact of opportunity multiplies when paired with purpose.

People like Diana Trujillo, the Colombian-born robotic arm lead for the Mars Perseverance mission. Like Liliana Villarreal, the Artemis landing and recovery director. Like Adriana Ocampo, former science program manager at NASA. Latin American women at the center of humanity's greatest adventures — women that Nicol and Mariana dream of becoming.
The world just felt what it's like to care about space again. To feel small in the best possible way. This film arrives at exactly that moment — when audiences are primed to ask: who is reaching for this next? Who are we not yet seeing?
The answer is in the Amazon. It's on a rooftop in Soacha. It's in girls who have been gazing at the same stars all along.

La misión de Artemis no sucedió por accidente. Fue construida por personas que alguna vez fueron niños mirando el cielo, atreviéndose a maravillarse. Personas como Diana Trujillo, ingeniera aeroespacial colombiana quien es directora de vuelo, líder táctico de la misión y líder del sistema del brazo robótico del Perseverance. In Awe of Stars is directed, written, and produced by Isabel Mendez, a Colombian journalist and filmmaker with over 30 years of experience telling stories for NatGeo, Discovery Channel, History Channel, Telemundo, Caracol TV, RCN and Fox. She has directed documentaries, series, telenovelas, and reality shows in both the United States and Latin America. She knows these stories, these landscapes, and these communities from the inside.
Our producer, Emma Crow-Willard, is a former NASA scientist with a master's in science communications from Yale, who has produced for National Geographic and led the Webby-nominated series Climate Now. She has given presentations to engage youth in STEM and continues the work to change the narrative of women in STEM with her company, Roots of Unity.
Behind the camera is cinematographer Rafael Puentes — also Colombian, also 30-plus years in the field — whose work spans Disney, Peacock TV, and Telemundo. His eye for light and image has shaped some of Latin America's most visually compelling productions.
Cutting the film is Etienne Boussac, one of the most decorated editors working in documentary and narrative film today. Born in Colombia, trained in Paris, his credits include Embrace of the Serpent — the film nominated for the 2016 Oscar for best Foreign Language film — as well as The Ghost Writer and Inglourious Basterds.
Producer David Diaz is a Colombian-born digital storyteller and environmental educator with a Master's in Aquatic Ecology. His work sits at the intersection of science, conservation, and visual storytelling — making him a natural fit for a film that travels deep into the Amazon and asks big questions about the natural world. His films have screened at festivals across the country.

Throughout her career, Isabel has directed, produced, and edited documentaries, scripted series, telenovelas, and reality programs. Her work is driven by a commitment to telling impactful human stories, with a particular focus on childhood, education, and the experiences of women who challenge social barriers and redefine expectations. During their time at NASA, they received hands-on training in STEM, met astronauts, and were mentored by Latin American professionals leading space missions. These experiences were life-changing. For Nicol, it planted a seed of hope and responsibility. At her young age, she has begun working with youth collectives in Mitú, using her story to inspire other Indigenous children and support mental health initiatives in her community. She is determined to use science to combat suicidal ideation among children in her community.
Cuatro años después, en 2024, Nicol fue seleccionada para el mismo programa, convirtiéndose en la primera niña indígena de su región en ir a la NASA. A pesar de sus diferencias de edad, geografía y antecedentes culturales, ambas niñas comparten una conexión poderosa: Un profundo sentido de asombro, perseverancia y la creencia de que la ciencia puede ser una herramienta para la sanación y el cambio social.
Durante su tiempo en la NASA, recibieron capacitación práctica en STEM, conocieron astronautas y fueron guiados por profesionales latinoamericanos que lideraban misiones espaciales. Mariana, now a university student, is pursuing degrees in industrial engineering and mathematics, with plans to continue into aerospace studies. She also shares her astronomy knowledge to children in her community as a Boy Scout leader and is developing an app to help amateur astronomers stay informed about celestial events. Both girls actively use what they’ve learned to uplift others, demonstrating that the impact of opportunity multiplies when paired with purpose.

In Awe of Stars is directed, written, and produced by Isabel Mendez, a Colombian journalist and filmmaker with over 30 years of experience telling stories for NatGeo, Discovery Channel, History Channel, Telemundo, Caracol TV, RCN and Fox. She has directed documentaries, series, telenovelas, and reality shows in both the United States and Latin America. She knows these stories, these landscapes, and these communities from the inside.
Our producer, Emma Crow-Willard, is a former NASA scientist with a master's in science communications from Yale, who has produced for National Geographic and led the Webby-nominated series Climate Now. She has given presentations to engage youth in STEM and continues the work to change the narrative of women in STEM with her company, Roots of Unity.
Behind the camera is cinematographer Rafael Puentes — also Colombian, also 30-plus years in the field — whose work spans Disney, Peacock TV, and Telemundo. His eye for light and image has shaped some of Latin America's most visually compelling productions.
Cutting the film is Etienne Boussac, one of the most decorated editors working in documentary and narrative film today. Born in Colombia, trained in Paris, his credits include Embrace of the Serpent — the film nominated for the 2016 Oscar for best Foreign Language film — as well as The Ghost Writer and Inglourious Basterds.
Producer David Diaz is a Colombian-born digital storyteller and environmental educator with a Master's in Aquatic Ecology. His work sits at the intersection of science, conservation, and visual storytelling — making him a natural fit for a film that travels deep into the Amazon and asks big questions about the natural world. His films have screened at festivals across the country.
