The Story
"The Sancorp Conspiracy"
In the mid-1960s, semi-alcoholic Henry Foster's dull pharmacology job at Sancorp Pharmaceutical Labs takes a dark turn when he stumbles upon disturbing government documents about a new drug he's been testing. Seeing a chance to be a hero, Henry dives into a dangerous investigation.
As a global financial crisis looms, Henry uncovers Malik Mond and the World State Globalist Society, the shadowy organization funding his research. He shares his fears with Sarah, a new colleague he cares for, but she dismisses his claims of a global coup.
Undeterred, Henry delves deeper, only to face consequences from powerful forces. When he attempts to destroy the drug research, he's thrust into a deadly showdown with a United Nations agent—one man fighting corruption, the other a pawn of sinister forces.
Since my first reading of Aldous Huxley's masterpiece "Brave New World," I couldn't stop thinking about the parallels I saw between the dystopian society of the novel and modern Western society.
Today, nearly every smartphone user is constantly inundated with information from social media and the '24 hour' news cycle. Many people are 'forced' to stay connected or risk losing contact with current events, trends, information, and even family and friends.
I suspect a great deal of people, especially from younger generations are 'stuck' in this information stream. After a few years of constantly using social media, watching television, news, and videos online, the brain's dopamine system is overworked and confused. People become reliant on their phones to entertain them, and provide stimulation. They become unable to escape the need for continuous hits of dopamine. And like any drug addiction, it's a negative feedback loop.
This trend is likely the culprit behind why more people now than ever are on antidepressant or antianxiety medication. I think technology may be tremendously problematic for individuals and society if not used with extreme discipline and caution.
Happiness is everyone's ultimate goal, but what happens when you confuse it with constant pleasure? The desire to maintain a certain level of pleasure by any means necessary, seems to be how many citizens of modern Western society are trapped in a psychological prison, without knowing so. This expectation seems to have created a spiritual hole in our society, one that consumerism tries it's best to fill, but never can.
In my opinion, this situation almost perfectly mirrors the pleasure-dependent society of "Brave New World".
My goal with the film is to bring awareness to this, call it a warning.
"In Plain Sight" tells the story of the set-up. It's my attempt at answering the question: How did the crazy dystopia of "Brave New World" come to be?
Trust your gut, seek the truth.
"Absolute power corrupts absolutely"
"Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley explores the consequences of a highly controlled, technologically advanced society that sacrifices individuality and freedom for stability and superficial happiness. The World State employs genetic engineering, conditioning, and the drug soma to ensure conformity and instant gratification, eradicating personal ambition and genuine emotions. Through characters like Bernard Marx and John the Savage, the novel contrasts individuality with societal conformity, highlighting the emptiness of a life focused solely on pleasure. Huxley’s work serves as a cautionary tale about the dehumanizing effects of technological control and the loss of personal identity.
