Mission Statement

Sometimes I have an urge to be elsewhere. I wonder about this siren call. Indigo Elsewhere explores this from the perspective of two transwomen looking for something they can grasp onto while society seems to shift and crumble around them. Can people find love in a hopeless place?

The Story

Indigo Elsewhere is a film about two unemployed, directionless transsexual lesbians who connect in a reality shifting way. One woman, Indigo, has the ability to communicate using a spiritual-emotional telepathy, which she shares with a new friend, Junebug.

Junebug is a wanderer who doesn’t stay anywhere for long.  She fantasizes about using a spell she learned while hopping trains that takes you to a different reality called Elsewhere. Indigo isn’t sure if she wants to go to Elsewhere, she feels trapped in her life, but she’s used to it.  And, once you go to Elsewhere, you can’t come back.

Indigo Elsewhere is an exploration of the power of intimate connection amongst housing insecurity, and looming environmental catastrophe.  It is aimed at anyone who has experienced feeling alienated or been “on the outside looking in.” It is a film that speaks to hard truths while providing a cathartic exodus— imagining an improbable, even absurdly optimistic trajectory.

Reference Still

There are a number of side characters that bring additional perspectives to the story, each in a search for something ineffable, even if they aren’t entirely aware of it.

We meet Indigo’s closest friend, Rae, a non-binary rave pixie who is also a semi-professional dancer. Rae and Indigo relate on not understanding their places in the world, though Rae is much more extroverted and also actively addicted to their own escape mechanisms.

Then there is Gabriel, the homeowner who rents Indigo’s unit to her. Gabriel is a lonely person, who seems to long for friendship but finds himself in the uncomfortable role of being a landlord. He tries to offset this discomfort by housing people he truly cares about and who need help, but who also- as in Indigo’s case, don’t really have the means to pay the rent he needs.

Other characters include Andrew, a single father living quietly with his kids while dissociating into his artwork. Andrew's daughter Ariana, who may or may not have magic powers herself, and Shane, Rae’s roomate/situationship who enables Rae’s darker impulses while placing his focus on spiritual philosophies around UFO’s.

Wish (2022) - Short Film by Willow Skye-Biggs

Indigo Elsewhere is an experimental narrative film, combining elements of social realism with an abstract impressionistic sensibility.  There are elements of a “hang out” film, focusing on moments and moods, while following a story that is enigmatically simple.

Reference Moodboards

The sound design will feature emotional 90’s trance music that Indigo listens to out of a portable Bluetooth speaker she always keeps with her.

Reference for color and texture

The film will be shot in largely natural light with cool saturated colors reminiscent of indie films from the late 90’s.

Shots will alternate between still, deep focus long takes and tracking shots when Indigo is out wandering.

Influences draw from the sculptural pacing and spaciousness of slow cinema auteurs such as Tsai-Ming Liang and Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the raw, radical energy of the New Queer films from the 90s and various forms of social realism, both literal and magical.

The film is being written and directed by filmmaker and multimedia artist Willow Skye-Biggs.   With over a decade of work in electronic music, installation work, and video art, she has spent the past 5 years dedicated to studying how to make deeply evocative films with minimal funding and small to non-existent crews.  She has completed 7 short films, including Vapor Trails (2023) which premiered at NewFest in New York City and Dragonfly (2024) which was awarded Best Trans+ Genre film at TRANSlations in Seattle.

To help Willow bring this vision to life we have an amazingly dedicated cast and crew made up of close collaborators, many of whom have worked with Skye-Biggs on previous projects.

The aim is to create a shooting environment with as much space and flexibility as possible, allowing the actors and environments to take precedence.

The characters have all been written for, or adjusted to the actors playing them, giving the actors room to explore themselves as they explore their characters.

By keeping our crew small we keep the overall cost of the film much lower than a typical independent feature film would be.  The small group also helps us work more intimately with each other with less hustle and bustle than your average set.

Indigo is being played by Aidan Powell-Croft who was the lead actor in Skye-Biggs' film Vapor Trails. She brings a natural authenticity with her effortless ability to translate the nuanced emotions the character needs to embody. Indigo is a character based off the character played in Vapor Trails with new complicated layers and we are so excited to watch her bring Indigo's quiet moody daydreaming self to life.

Junebug is being played by Serena Dakota who is the new face to the team and we are so excited to work with her. She has worked recently on the sci-fi short film Anastasis and has the ability to move through emotional roles as well as having fantastic comedic energy and timing. She is going to bring the restless, trying to be carefree personality of Junebug to life and we can't wait to experience it.

In filmmaker Willow Skye-Biggs words:

“I want this film to flow through audiences like the river at its core, picking up psychic and spiritual debris and carrying it away. It is really important to me that I put my creative energy into work that opens hearts, touches those who need it, and helps to heal much of the suffering I see and experience in the world. I have to make this movie because I haven’t seen it and it is something I need to experience and to feel."
