Mission Statement

The feeling of wanting to go back in time to spend more time with your grandparents is a universal feeling. I too feel that with my late grandfather. And, with this film I want to let him know that I would have liked to sit down with him and hear all about his love for western movies.

The Story

A FILM ABOUT WISHING YOU HAD SPENT MORE TIME WITH YOUR GRANDPARENTS

Have you ever looked back and realised that you should have spent more time with a family member, a friend, a loved one? That you had the chance to listen to someone and their interests but never sat down with them? Well that’s exactly the reason why this shortfilm exists.

The Saving of Iron Draw by the Mighty Paco Rey follows the story of Jack and Paco, grandson and grandfather who haven’t seen eachother in years after Paco abandonned the family due to his parkinson’s diagnosis. Now, Jack is forced to live with Paco again after loosing his father and has to deal with the grief and getting used to a new life with someone he used to love. Both Jack and Paco slowly start realising that they share one thing that might bring them together: their love for making home made western movies.

Jack has one thing he holds dear to himself: his DV CAM with which he used to record his western movies with his dad. With it we’ll discover the story inside those home made movies, starring Jack as Iron Draw, Dad as Colt Rattle and Paco as Paco Rey. These snippets of past recordings will show how both Jack and Paco feel, how their relationship used to be and how it can grow further after they make ammends.

The Saving of Iron Draw by the Mighty Paco Rey is a very personal story loosely based on the experience of seeing my grandpa, Paco, watching western films every time I went to his house. I distinctly remember that he would sit on the same exact spot of his couch watching John Wayne movies or westerns that they showed on TV. Sadly, back then I never really enjoyed westerns and I never got to sit by his side to watch them.

*Paco hated us calling him grandpa, so to us he will always be Paco

Aside from Paco no one in my family is a big “film” person, I’m the only one that really loves film and I truly believe that I get that passion from my grandpa, even if I didn’t get to enjoy or pass the time with him watching his favourite films.

So, this film is my way of honouring what he has left me and a way to make ammends for all those times that I didn’t sit down by his side on his sofa and listen to all of his favourite films, actors, directors or why he liked westerns so much.

This film is inspired by various movies, paintings and even music. The main inspiration is seen in the movie Aftersun (2022) which uses the DV CAM as a “second film” within the main film.

Stills from Aftersun (2022), Dir: by Charlotte Wells

The raw image of the DV CAM footage shown in the film is exactly what we’re going for in this film for when Jack is watching his old home made western films with his dad.

Regarding the western aspect of the movie, the inspirations are more varied. Some like The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962, my favourite western), The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) or The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007, film that serves as inspiration for the title of this shortfilm).

Other Inspirations

Paintings are another thing that inspires me a lot when making films. Especially regarding the tone, look and feel for the characters.

The main painting that inspired this film is Rain, Steam and Speed by J. M. W. Turner. There’s something about the colours that just matches perfectly with what I want to show.

From left to right, top top bottom: Rain, Steam and Speed, J. W. Turner | No. 61, Mark Rothko | The Sea and the Monk, Caspar David Friedrich | La Chambre á Coucher, Vincent Van Gogh | Isle of the Dead, Arnold Böcklin | Sunset on the Plains, Frederic Remington

The team is led by writter, director, Javier Ferrer R-Rey, who just finished his shortfilm A Sunset Smell. This shortfilm will soon be launched into different international film festivals! With years of experience in filmmaking Javier is ready to direct his most personal project to date with The Saving of Iron Draw by the Mighty Paco Rey, and knows it will be successful and the staple of his early acreer in the industry.

Additionally, Javier is a very strong voice against the surge of AI in the art of filmmaking, making it his staple to shy away from this tool in every department of his films. He strives for human creativity, human soul and storytelling that actually matters and connects the audience to the message he has to say to the world. Above all he wants audience to experience true emotions conveyed by true artists and ultimately have everyone feel like Totó feels in the last scene of Cinema Paradiso.

And I’m also sure that, even if I might not know you, I do know that you’ve had that feeling of wanting to go back in time and sit with your grandpa and have them tell you all about their interests, what they love and why. Well, in it’s core, this shortfilm is about that exact same feeling, and with your support this shortfilm can come to life.

Appart from all the incentives that you can claim when supporting this film you can also help by spreading the word to your family, friends, coworkers, old classmates about this shortfilm which with they will feel connected.

Aftersun (2022), Dir: Charlotte Wells

A Sunset Smell is the most recent production and is currently touring different film festivals across the world!

Born and raised in Getxo, Spain, Javier has always had a soft spot for art. Initially he wanted to go to filmschool as a degree but he ended up choosing a double degree in Journalism and Audiovisual Communications. During university he got to experience different movie sets while studying for a month in FAMU at Prague and a semester in the University of Essex. Since then his passion for film has done nothing but grow every day and now he's completing an MFA in Filmmaking through the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles.

His view towards film is very intimate and personal, always striving for humane stories that tap deep into the human soul and intends to leave a mark on whoever watches his films. Especially in this new age filled with AI generated content, Javier firmly believes that true film and authentic art are only the product of human creativity. The Saving of Iron Draw by the Mighty Paco Rey is the next step on that mission!

Director of Photography

Our DP is the exceptionally talented James Valdez, a Mexican-Filipino-American cinematographer based in Los Angeles, known for crafting emotionally rich, visually striking stories. A U.S. Army veteran and distinguished alumnus of both UCLA Film School and NYFA, he earned his MFA in Cinematography, graduation at the top of his class, reflecting his dedication and deep respect for the craft.

Whether a quiet, intimate scene or a bold and climatic, James approaches each project with a collaborative spirit and a clear artistic voice. James recently wrote, directed, produced and DP'd his successful shortfilm "Canta Santiago" which won the Jury Price at the DGA Student Film Awards for Best Latino Student Filmmaker as well as the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival for Best Student Short and many others. It recently got added to Omeleto's library in Youtube, one of the leading channels in sharing short films.

Line Producer and Assistant Director

Meet our Assistant Director and Line producer!! Jake Fairbanks is a 26-year-old Director, Writer, and Producer based in Los Angeles, originally from Florida, with an academic foundation in film and a lifelong commitment to storytelling. He earned his undergraduate degree in Film Studies from the University of North Florida and is currently completing his master’s degree at the New York Film Academy in Burbank.

From a young age, Jake knew he wanted to tell stories. First dreaming of writing books, until his father told him that to be a writer, he would have to read. Instead, he discovered filmmaking as his creative language, where images, performance, and rhythm could carry the stories he wanted to tell. That early shift shaped his identity as a visual storyteller and continues to define his work as a director today.

In addition to directing his own projects, Jake has developed a strong passion for assistant directing and recently contributed as an Assistant Director on Javier’s set, where he thrived in a leadership and coordination role. His perspective as a director enables him to translate Javier’s creative goals into practical, on-the-ground solutions that keep the production focused and fluid. Whether leading his own projects or supporting another filmmaker’s work, Jake is driven by the same goal he has had since childhood: to tell meaningful stories and help great ideas reach the screen.
