Mission Statement

Friends catch feelings for each other. It happens. But does that have to threaten the friendship? It Happened One Weekend looks past the surface level idea of the "friend zone", and takes an honest look at the complicated emotions that can form between two people.

The Story

Another Indie Film About The Love Lives of People in Their Late-Twenties

There's no shortage of films about people in their late-twenties who are struggling in the dating scene. And the concept of friends trying to decide if they should date is almost its own sub-genre within romantic comedies. But there's a reason these stories keep getting told: dating is complicated!

We aren't looking to add another film to the indie rom-com genre just for the fun of it. I believe if you're going to tell a story that's been told before, you should update it for the current times. My goal is to craft a film that looks more true to life. Our film is an honest look at the feelings that can grow between two friends—especially between two friends who are looking for love.

-Zac

The Story

Julia is a wedding photographer. That pays the bills, but she has more artistic ambitions. She’s more of a realist when it comes to relationships. Aaron is a copywriter by day, screenwriter by night. He’s a hopeless romantic who sees signs in everything. Aaron and Julia have become close friends over the years. They confide in each other and enjoy killing time together.

When we first meet Aaron and Julia they are both seeing someone—though they don't consider these relationships to be anything serious. The story is set in motion when both of their relationships fall apart at the beginning of the weekend. This blows up their weekend plans, but sets the stage for Aaron and Julia to spend the weekend together. Spending all this time together causes hidden feelings to rise, forcing Julia and Aaron to explore if they should be more than friends.

Tone & Style

Black and white images naturally evoke the feeling of nostalgia or romance. For this film, hopefully, the black and white images will evoke both. This is a seminal moment in Julia and Aaron’s friendship — one they’ll look back on when they think about the story of their relationship. Julia and Aaron are also looking for love. For them, it feels like romance is just around the corner.

It Happened One Weekend is heavily inspired by films like Frances Ha, When Harry Met Sally..., Girlfriends, The Apartment, Drinking Buddies, I Knew Her Well, It Happened One Night, and too many French New Wave films to count.

Indy

I moved to Indianapolis in 2016. I've made five short films here. I love shooting in Indy. Film audiences around the U.S. are used to seeing cities like New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago in movies. It’s time they get to see Indianapolis on the big screen.

Relationship Experts

Okay...our cast and crew aren't actual relationship experts. But we are real people who have had to navigate our way through the dating scene. We've had our hearts broken, and we've broken other people's hearts along the way. So while we aren't experts, we do know what we are talking about when it comes to relationships (there's a reason we aren't making a movie about rocket science).

Production

Our film will begin principal photography in September. Your contribution will help make sure our team has everything they need to succeed. The money we raise will go toward paying crew, renting gear, feeding the cast & crew, location fees, and all the other fun logistics that go into making a film.

Filmmaking During A Pandemic

Thankfully our cast and crew is fully vaccinated. That being said, we will take the necessary precautions to make sure everyone is as safe as possible on set. We love making movies with our friends, but we also love our friends more. We want everyone to remain healthy.

How To Help

Every contribution goes 100% into the making of this film. Spreading the word about our film and what are we aiming to accomplish will also be a huge help!
