Our anxiety of death is usually calmed by a personal belief (or unbelief) about what happens next, allowing us to lead normal lives. For some, this unanswered question erodes the psyche. This film is about pushing the questions aside to live in the moment.

Mission Statement

The film gives validity to both the perspective of a young religious child and a firmly atheist college-student, arriving at the conclusion that no one idea is right or wrong, as connecting in the moment is what binds us as humans regardless of belief or age.

The Story

It Happens follows Lanie, a 20 year old hypochondriac (extreme anxiety of death), through the morning leading up to an important doctor's appointment. Walking along the way through a park with her 12 year old brother Max, Lanie must abandon her incessant preocupations when they are confronted with the subject of death.

This is a loved story by our quirky team, as it chronicles our obsession and changing relationship with death as we age. Our vision depicts this world as if stitched together from old negatives of your childhood family super 8 camera.

We have the ambitious goal of shooting this on 16mm film, which our director of photography is independently studying this semster for in preparation. In this digital age, it is unfortunate that it is now a rare opportunity to shoot on 16mm in film school. We are the only production in the past two years at our school with this ambition, despite having the equipment available.

We would be forever grateful for your help in making this a reality by donations that will be put towards film stock, development, special lenses, a gorgeous outdoor location, and a studio teacher for our minor on set (California Law).

With a crew of about twenty-five people, hundereds of hours of work has already been put into this project and we would be ecstatic to see it come to life. The key crew is in collaboration across multiple university classes which are all focused on the completion of this Junior Year Thesis. Justin and Maddie have been working together since freshman year and hope to also use this film as a test run for our Senior Thesis Film about a California roadtrip that we are also plan to shoot on 16mm.
