The Story

Growing up the youngest of five kids without a lot of money, I was keenly aware of my place within my family and society as a child and a girl. Needless to say, I did not grow up with a camera in hand. But what I did have were mountains of family photos and slides which I spent hours pouring over and 6 older family members who are some of the best storytellers I know. Deeply interested in the shifts and turns within family relationships, I come to fillmmaking with a true love and commitment to telling stories that represent those. Bringing with me my background in cinéma vérité, my narrative films are grounded in a realism that pervades the storytelling from script to screen.

JULIE BABY is fundamentally about the passing on of shame from one woman to another. All too often, this hand-off occurs within our most intimate relationships, the family, and starts at a young age. Though love is there, carelessness and hurt can be too. JULIE BABY explores all of this as 7-year-old Julie goes from being called a baby to a whore in the span of an afternoon. Not one to be told anything, Julie investigates these words for herself. In doing so, she discovers not only the power of self-identification but also her ability to stand up for others facing bullying.
When all she wants is to be the center of attention on her birthday, 7-year-old JULIE gets in trouble for name calling at school. She discovers what the world defines as a whore when she gets caught up in a domestic fight between a man and a woman at a gas station. Her birthday unravels further when she returns home to discover her mother is drunk and her sister is bailing on her birthday plans. Intent on celebrating somehow, she is left to play all of the cards in her hand to try to bring her family together around her, ultimately getting caught in the fray between them.

A letter from our writer/director, Emily:
The first time I was told I looked sexy I was 9 years old. My teenage sister sat me down and showed me a picture of myself dressed up in a silk nightgown and heels, told me I looked hyper sexy and asked why I did it. What had been a fun, glamorous make believe at womanhood suddenly turned shameful and bad. Then, at 10 years old, I watched as my 12-year-old sister was called a whore for the first time. Nothing to do with the meaning of the word, everything to do with its intended effect. I decided then to make sure that never happened to me. I hid, stayed quiet, and kept anything remotely interesting a secret. But the word came anyway.
Julie Baby is a love letter to its characters: sisters who are always pulling together and apart and a mother struggling to take care of herself much less her two daughters. It is a coming-of-age story told with the frustration of women who are trying to love each other and love themselves, and failing to do any of it well.
