Mission Statement

"Jupiter" seeks to deconstruct the evolving, complex nature of parent-child relationships. As we grow older, we realize that our parents are human, too, and our grudges become harder to hold. Ultimately, these universal themes lead us to the realization that we are all just humans doing our best.

The Story

When 23-year-old Callie discovers she might be pregnant, she returns to the memories of her estranged, alcoholic mother, forcing her to confront the pain of their unresolved relationship and the love they once had.

Callie, 23, abruptly wakes up from yet another nightmare about her estranged, alcoholic mother. Restless and suspicious she might be a mother herself, she decides to take a pregnancy test. As Callie awaits her result, she becomes lost in the good and bad memories that shaped her complex relationship with her mother, and ultimately what broke their undying bond.

We (and Callie) grapple with the question:

What are the bounds of unconditional love?

When is it time to call it quits? When is it time to forgive?

"JUPITER is an ode to the ever-evolving and complex parent-child relationship. As we grow older, so does our perspective on life and relationships. Our grudges become harder to hold when we realize our parents are human, too. This film explores addiction, forgiveness, loss, and the search for meaning in life. These universal themes lead us to the undeniable truth that we are all just humans doing our best. I hope this film resonates with those struggling to revisit their childhood and forgive."

About This Team

WRITER/DIRECTOR: Amanda Mickwee

Amanda Mickwee is a Writer/Director and soon-to-be-graduate of NYU Tisch- Kanbar Institute of Film & TV. She has extensive experience in development and talent management in the narrative and documentary industries. This past year, she produced, wrote, directed, and edited her debut short film, "Serenity", which was an Honorable Mention in the Hollywood Independent Filmmaker Awards & Festival. Last spring, she worked in development for Talking Wall Pictures in NYC, and this summer, she worked for Voltage Pictures and Aperture Entertainment in Los Angeles. She is also a recipient of the Ulrich Tisch Funded Internship Award, given to only eight students at NYU Tisch. As a filmmaker, she strives to tell unseen stories that inspire, challenge perspectives, drive compassion, and celebrate life.

PRODUCER: Sebastian Hunt

Growing up in a small Connecticut town alongside two brothers, one goldfish and an armada of stuffed animals, Sebastian began his filmmaking career at a young age with a slew of independent home movies shot with his father's Flip camcorder (all of which, to his dismay, are widely available on YouTube). His present day moviemaking efforts are slightly more sophisticated, frequently focusing on darkly comedic, absurdist plots, and believably unbelievable characters. Known for his award-winning short films Served and The Lord's House, and currently in post-production for his third film, Earnestly Yours.

PRODUCER: Musi de Ovin

Virginia “Musi” de Ovín is a senior studying documentary film, colonial history, and producing at New York University. Originally from Miami and born into an immigrant family, Musi is interested in stories of fragmentation, intergenerational trauma, and migration.  She is currently working as an assistant producer on a feature length documentary about Dominican Bachata and is excited to work on Jupiter
