Mission Statement

Year after year, Native/Indigenous representation in the media ranks at the bottom. This metric is alarming, given that there is increasingly more demand for diverse stories all around the world. Our film aims to be a big drop in a small bucket, a project by/for/and about Indigenous people in LA.

OUR FILM'S ROOTS

Kalli Nepantla (The House of In-Between) is based on the real life experiences of an Indigenous woman and her family.

Each Member of the family lives with their own mental health realities and fights to maintain a sense of balance.

During the course of the film, this balance is lost.

Here's Marialena...

Our family's matriarch, a single mother of two young women.

Life's pressures constantly pressure Marialena to put her work first. Prioritizing survival, sacrificing her needs, and spreading herself too thin to be fully present for her girls in their time of need. She deals with anxiety and depression.

Will Marialena be able to provide a Mother's healing touch in time to prevent a tragedy?

Meet Xochipilli...

The younger sister.

Xochipilli lives with Borderline Personality Disorder, an eating disorder, and agoraphia.

Live has not been easy for her, and her behavior can be explosive and egotistic.

Can Xochipilli search her past for a core memory that helps her feel loved by her family?

This is Tlalli...

A young Indigenous woman who deals with Bipolar disorder, PTSD, and an unhealthy relationship with food.

As the older sister and daughter, she has taken it upon herself to keep her family together since her Abuelita's death.

Can Tlalli lean on her grandmother's spirit to preserve her family and save herself from emotional collapse?

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

Mothers. Daughters. Sisters. Women. We're all connected to a feminine source. Similarly for everyone on this land, we have a connection to the Indigenous communities that came before us.

With Kalli Nepantla (The House of In-Between) we explore these connections by bringing audiences into the life of a family navigating these identities during a time of mental health crises.

Our film comes at a time in which Indigenous stories remain the lowest represented in Hollywood. We want audiences to realize that there is strength to be found in culture, tradition, and community when we all make the choice to take care of each other.
