Oftentimes, one's early 20's is a notoriously messy, and confusing time, often only made worthwhile by friends and family; Kate and Kade just so happen to be both, having each other's backs while chasing their dreams in New York City. Community is the backbone of our society and it starts at home.

Mission Statement

Kate & Kade aims to represent growing pains that come with feeling "othered" while simultaneously having to show up for our loved ones when they need us. As hyper-individualism persists and grows as a concept in today's society, the need for connection and community should never be undervalued.

The Story

Once upon a time, Kate and Kade's mothers ditched their husbands, fell in love and thus the two became a dynamic step-sibling duo. Now, with college behind them, they’re taking on New York City side by side, both chasing their own version of success. But as reality sets in, their once-solid dynamic is tested by new jobs, new relationships, and the growing pains of early adulthood. Kate & Kade is a coming-of-age comedy about chosen family, personal ambition, and learning how to grow without growing apart.

CHARACTERS:

KATE: Kate is the female lead. She’s a young writer who moves to NYC hoping to contribute to the fashion and cultural zeitgeist of the city. She moves through life with a spunky attitude and an uncanny inability to take no for an answer.

KADE: The male lead of the show is Kade. Kade is inspired to move to New York City after getting his theatre degree. He hopes to make waves in his acting career in the city.

THEMES EXPLORED:

  • Blended/chosen family
  • "Coming out"...again
  • Same-sex parentage
  • Cross-cultural upbringing
  • Dating in NYC
  • Friendship
  • Parasocial relationships
  • LGBTQIA+ community
  • Betrayal
  • Workplace culture
  • Body image

Confession #1: I take a lot of pride in being from New York City. A circumstance completely out of my control, at times I marvel at the fact that out of anywhere in the world, I was one of the 7.3 million (at the time) blessed enough to be here. I love the mix of global cultures that make up the city, I love the energy that pulses through the streets and the undeniable influence that our culture has on the world. I don’t think I truly understood the larger context of NYC until college.

Cut to: Post-undergrad graduation. Almost all of my friends that I made in college were from out-of-state. This turned into a majority of them morphing into career driven-NYC transplants: a concept that’s become a cultural phenomenon, apparently. By the time graduation rolled around, I had sure developed the ambition to succeed in the city that I called home, which, along with the personal evolution occurring at the time, renewed my zeal for the city. This place that so many people were clamoring to be a part of, I already had a birthright to…which is pretty freakin’ cool if you ask me.

Confession #2: I’ve always been a big fan of comedies about friendship, or ‘buddy comedies,’ as they’re referred to. Having said that, films and TV shows that feature sibling relationships are some of my favorites. So much of the children’s programming we watched as kids featured hijinks carried out by siblings, either in spite of their sibling or to cover for them in sticky situations. Sibling bonds are surprisingly some of the most morpheus, ranging from the silly shenanigans of The Suite Life and Zack and Cody, to the more mature, insidious nature of Cruel Intentions’ Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Merteuil.

In addition, across the media, we have seen depictions of family that defy what a ‘normal’ family looks like.

This birthed the idea for Kate & Kade; although their family dynamic may not be ‘typical,’ the love and support they have for each other trumps all.

Confession #3: Speaking candidly as a seasoned 20-something, you need emotional support as a growing adult. Sometimes, you need a lot of it. It isn’t always a 2-hour cry session; sometimes it’s just someone letting you know that they have your back, that can shift an entire mindset. And sometimes it isn’t an entire village cheering for you, but instead one person who sees you in that moment. My close friendships have truly shaped and molded my 20’s, for better and otherwise. They have provided some of the most vibrant colors that I am able to pull from my life. In way, Kate & Kade is a love letter to the friendships I’ve held during this particular time in life.

Principal photography for Kate & Kade is scheduled for Spring 2026, aiming for a Fall 2026 online release. In order to bring all eight episodes of Season One to life, we have calculated a budget of $10,000. We anticipate this to cover the cost of locations, equipment, cast and crew, craft services, production design and post-production. If we were to exceed our goal, remaining funds will be directed towards marketing/promotional material, including interactive events with the cast and crew of the project.
