Mission Statement

Our mission at Keepsake House is to support independent artists who have been historically underrepresented. From Story to Song specifically celebrates that mission, as its premise is to spotlight marginalized stories and provide an opportunity for those stories to be showcased as pieces of art.

The Story

Keepsake House is a home for independent artists to share the stage and make memories out of live performance.

We were founded in spring 2021 by Jasmine Jang and Hailey Savage, an artist and event manager who connected over the lack of community space or support for independent artists in New York.

This led the pair to build an organization that could bring something special to both artists and fans: a safe, supportive space to inspire storytelling and nurture meaningful artist-audience connection. Through roundtable-style concerts and a focus on conversation about our artists’ works, Keepsake House hopes to leave listeners with a deeper love for and understanding of the art made: a keepsake to hold onto.

Since our founding, we have:

  • Produced 15 live music shows
  • Supported over 60 independent artists through performance opportunity and fair pay
  • Raised over $6,000 for Asian American organizations and promoted over 10 fellow Asian American small businesses

In October 2021, we teamed up with Music Director TONIE (below, center) and combined two grants received from the New York City Artist Corps to produce a show called From Story to Song that was free to attend. The concept of the show was simple, yet profound: four Storytellers (comedians, poets, activists, etc.) each shared their story with a Songwriter they had never met, who then wrote an original song based on their story. The songs were arranged for a full ensemble accompaniment by TONIE, and then performed live with that ensemble and for the first time in front of the Storytellers at this show.

Look, it's us! That's Hailey, TONIE, and Jasmine, and on the right is our poster for last year's show, designed by local Queens artist Jeff Deng

Here's what people had to say about the show:

"[I] loved witnessing the process of storyteller to songwriter to orchestra performance, and seeing the reactions of the storytellers."
-Anonymous guest

"There was such mutual respect and care for each others’ vulnerability and craft and a sense of human connection that was profoundly beautiful. It was a show that reminded me why art is so important, and how it can foster community and empathy. I was in tears for most of it, and I left that night feeling more whole and more alive. I also thought to myself that if ever there was a show I wanted to be a part of in the future, it was From Story to Song."
-Sarah Kang, independent artist

"It is so hard in New York to put on large events, much less self-produce an event like this, but Keepsake is one of those rare organizations that makes good on their promises of creating opportunities and spaces like these. Without them, I would have never had the chance to co-create music with a large ensemble for an audience eager to listen. Every single person who took part in this experience recognized the value and rarity of warm spaces such as Keepsake where art is allowed to speak so honestly and freely."
-TONIE, independent artist and Music Director

This show was a special one, and we knew immediately that it would become our annual show, a finale to our yearly Artist Residency program. Without any funding available to us, we were not able to produce the show again this year, but next year we're doing it twice...

We have TWO From Story to Song shows planned and booked for 2023, both to take place at Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 and streamed live online on these dates:

  • Friday, January 6 at 7pm EST
  • Saturday, October 14 at 7pm EST

This year's Resident Artists will make up the January line-up: Songwriters Alex Wong, Morninglory, and Sarah Kang, and Storytellers David GloverLucy Yu, and Nataly Aukar. These six artists are already hard at work sharing stories and writing songs, and in January their performances will be backed by a full band! Read their bios on our "Team" tab.

The 2023 Artists in Residence performing in October's show: Songwriters Alex Petti, Moyana Olivia, Napat Snidvongs, and TONIE with Storytellers Grace Aki, Robert Kuang, and Valarie Walker.

From Story to Song features underrepresented artists and showcases their stories as works of art. Every step of this show's process–from the songwriter finding new and existing meanings while writing the song, to the storyteller taking in that song for the first time, to the audiences hearing all of it unfold-creates an emotionally impactful experience for its participants as well as the audience.

Our shows always feature marginalized artists, including but not limited to BIPOC and LGBTQ+ musicians and storytellers. Our audiences generally represent the same: a diverse community of creatives and listeners who are deeply interested in or directly affected by these stories.

Keepsake House launched in the midst of the pandemic, so many of our shows began on Zoom. It was a challenging time for everyone, and we feel lucky to now be able to produce shows with our artists and audiences in one room. Our first ever iteration of From Story to Song was in October 2021, and we were able to make it free because of pandemic-related funding during the slow return of live events.

As a result of that show being free, we realized how much of an impact storytelling can have and the meaningful experience it would bring to anyone who wanted to attend. We believe that From Story to Song should always be a FREE show. Storytelling is deeply human and should be accessible for all.

For us to be able to make this a free show and pay everyone involved, we need your help!

Below is a breakdown of our budget. The majority of the funds we raise will go directly to the artists themselves, including the performing Songwriters and Storytellers, Music Directors, and band musicians. All other funds will be put toward renting a rehearsal space for the shows, filming and editing show videos, and any travel costs for artists and us. If we raise more than our goal, the additional funds will be used for adminstrative costs and promotion.

In addition to making a pledge for an incentive or item on our WishList, there are so many other ways you can help, including:

  • Follow this project! Click the button under "Make a pledge" to receive updates on this campaign and help us grow our audience.
  • Spread the word! This can be even more helpful than contributing. Know someone who is passionate about live music and storytelling? A person who feels marginalized and is looking for community? Introduce Keepsake House and this project to them; they might like it and we already like them! Not sure what to say? Try this:
    • Hey friend! Have you heard of Keepsake House? They produce really lovely roundtable shows with independent artists. One of them is a show called From Story to Song, and it's all about sharing diverse stories as works of art. They're looking for contributions to make this show FREE to the public. You can support their crowdfunding campaign to make that happen, or help spread the word by sharing the campaign: www.seedandspark.com/fund/keepsakehouse
  • Join our community! Follow us on social media, visit our website and sign up for our mailing list, and come out to a future show. We'd love to meet you.

THANK YOU for helping not only to make this project successful, but to ensure that independent artists are given a performance platform and compensated fairly. We can't wait to see you on the journey of how a story becomes a song.

When not working on Keepsake House, Hailey works in non-profit and NGO spaces, enjoys writing songs as an amateur duo with her dad, and spends all her extra time cooking vegan food or playing with her dog (and official Keepsake canine), Llewyn.

JANUARY SHOW ARTISTS

Alex Wong, Songwriter

Alex Wong creates music to help people remember who they are and show themselves to the world. He has always had a complicated relationship with his own memories, unable to remember his own childhood birthday parties yet possessing many vivid, sensory memories from dreams, places he’d never been, and what seemed almost like isolated vignettes from another life. That dissonance led to the songs on his latest album, “The Elephant and the Seahorse.” As he looked closer at his memories from the past, he was forced to acknowledge that he had been “hiding” his identity as a second generation Chinese-American for much of his life. Memories of being told to downplay his ethnicity in school, social groups, or in the mostly-white music industry, assimilate to white culture, speak with no accent, and keep himself small rushed to the surface, along with waves of shame and anger for buying into this conditioning. A lot of deep questioning followed, which he chronicles for the first time in his song “Show Yourself.”

Alex is a Latin GRAMMY-nominated artist and producer known for his work with Delta Rae, Vienna Teng, Melissa Ferrick and Morgxn, among others. Alex’s music has been featured in movies including “The Last Song” and TV shows including “True Blood.” Alex has toured all over the world, performing at festivals like Coachella, Outside Lands, and Corona Capital, in arenas in Mexico City and theaters in Europe and Japan, and on NPR’s Mountain Stage.

Alex has previously performed in the Keepsake House shows From Story to Song (2021) and Foresight and is a 2022 Keepsake House Artist in Residence. He also co-produced and performed in the Show Yourself benefit residency.

David GloverStoryteller

David Glover is an artist drawn to telling needed stories; stories that challenge comfort, question vulnerability, and press at the potent roots of trauma and healing. His artistic body of work centers on identity, history, and home with a focus on the complexity and measures of Black life, love and liberation.

David has previously performed in the Keepsake House shows From Story to Song (2021), Foresight, and Lighting Sparks and is a 2022 Keepsake House Artist in Residence.

Lucy YuStoryteller

Lucy Yu is the owner of Yu and Me Books located in Chinatown, Manhattan. She is a Scorpio but doesn't really know much about astrology and was a previous chemical engineer that no longer mixes chemicals. This is her first time sharing her work on stage.

Morninglory, Songwriter

Accomplished vocalist, actor, and writer, Livvy Marcus performs atmospheric folk music under the name “Morninglory,” her legal middle name. Born and raised in southern Massachusetts, Livvy graduated with a bachelor of music from BW Conservatory in Ohio. Her debut album, “Livvy Marcus Eats Her Shoe,” was released on all platforms in March 2022. She hasn’t gone a day without chocolate since 2018 and would generally always rather be singing. Do you like dancing? Do you sometimes live in the liminal space between giggling and crying?

Morninglory has previously performed in the Keepsake House shows Foresight and Lighting Sparks and is a 2022 Keepsake House Artist in Residence.

Nataly AukarStoryteller

Nataly Aukar is a Lebanese born and raised stand up comic based in NYC. She was featured at the Brooklyn Comedy Festival, has toured the country and the world opening for Gad El Maleh, Mo Amer and Ramy Youssef. She has starred in the short film Sofa So Good, featured in The New Yorker! Nataly was recently part of Netflix’s “Introducing…” showcase at the Netflix is a Joke Fest in 2022. Nataly is currently working on her hour, linktr.ee/natalyaukar for tickets!

Sarah Kang, Songwriter

Sarah Kang is a Korean-American jazz/soul/R&B singer/songwriter based in New York City. Born in South Korea and raised in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Dallas, her music, much like her life experiences, crosses the borders of genre. Her inspiration comes from artists like Crush, Bruno Major, and H.E.R.; however, her earnest voice paired with soul sensibilities and thoughtful songwriting create a sound that is all her own. Her hope is that her music can encourage listeners to ask important questions and provide safe, cozy spaces to rest. Sarah’s debut full-length album, “how i remember,” was released last October.

Sarah has previously performed in the Keepsake House shows Sarah Kang, Foresight, Show Yourself, and Linguistics and was a 2022 Keepsake House Artist in Residence.

BAND

TONIEMusic Director & Keys

TONIE is doing their very best to make you cry, in all the best ways. Their music is deeply autobiographical, taking on topics such as love and heartbreak, struggles with depression, and queer contemplations. TONIE wraps challenging conversations in luscious synths, driving guitars, and dynamic vocals that invites listeners to love themselves fully and bask in their feels.

The LA-native writes and produces each synth-pop track from the comfort of their skylit home studio in Brooklyn, NY — a perfect backdrop for the emotional vulnerability that colors their lyrics. Proudly Vietnamese American, nonbinary, and themselves!

TONIE has previously performed in the Keepsake House shows Show Yourself and Meet Cute Music and was the Music Director of From Story to Song (2021).
