Mission Statement

Writer, director & producer Chris Marciante decided to create something fresh & unique with Last Laugh. Sick of the stereo typical slasher film, he combined elements of neo-noir and slasher. Production was completed in 2018. We now need help with post-production costs, for the film's release.

The Story

"In a blink of an eye, everything can change"...

Everyone experiences grief, trauma and loss at points in their life. When creating Last Laugh, I looked for a positive coping mechanism to deal with the loss of one of my best friends. This film is dedicated to her. This influence is mirrored by Andrea's story and the pain she suffers due to the loss of her mother.

I was originally intending on creating a more traditional slasher film; something 80's inspired, which also had an urban legend influence. After completing the script, I found it had too many cliches. Taking a step back, and scratching my head, I did my best to come up with something extremely unique and innovative. The rest is history...

Last Laugh follows three intertwining stories, the first of which starts with Andrea. Andrea was a normal sixteen year old girl, and an only child. After losing her father at a young age, the bond between her and her mother, Christina became unbreakable. Mother and daughter adventures to the cinema were a regular occurence until one night, while leaving the theatre, Andrea's mother was brutally murdered in front of her own eyes.

Barely escaping, Andrea goes into hiding, while spiraling into a deep, dark depression.

Obsessed with her mothers killer, Andrea plots a course for revenge over the next nine years.

For Andrea, it's about revenge. For the killer, it's about the one that got away...

Our second story begins with Sam, who lives life as a vagabond. His relationships are all sabotaged due to his drug addiction and his obsession with escaping reality. By living a selfish existence, stuck in his narcissistic ways, Sam uses the drug Z, to fill the void within himself.

An outcast to society, Sam's life revolves around chasing the next high. Sam wakes up to the reality that he is out of money and drugs. Desperate and riddled with withdrawals, he sets out to find ways to make money to purchase more Z.

Sam's Journey leads him back to the sleazy Martini Motel that he lives out of. Ready for his next fix. His next high could be his last, as the nightmare is truly about to begin.

Our final story surrounds detective James Murphy. James lived the American dream. He had it all.  A career in law enforcement, a beautiful and supportive wife, and a lovely home until one day James caught his wife cheating with another officer. In a fit of rage, James nearly killed the man. This didn't go over well with internal affairs, which led to James' transfer to a new precinct, in the new town of Hillside. James lost everything. The nasty divorce caused his reality to come crashing down. Slowly decaying behind a desk, James continues to spiral down a rabbit hole of alcoholism and despair.

Five long years pass as James continues to rot behind his desk, until one day the Hillside maniac case was dropped on his lap. At first James didn't care much about this case; drowning in his own despair, however he saw this as an opportunity to get out of desk duty. As he continues digging deeper into his investigation, he uncovers a dark, twisted and disturbing world beneath the surface. Fueled with the rage of his past mistakes, James hunts down the killer in a race against time. Will James get his redemption or will the killer win?

A few major influences for LAST LAUGH come directly from, Steven King's, IT. Tim Curry's portrayal of Pennywise haunted me as a little kid.

I found his performance terrifying, menacing, creepy and absolute nightmare fuel.  Pennywise easily became the main inspiration for the protagonist.

Twisted Metal Black's, Sweet Tooth was also a major influence behind the clown's creation and design. Needles Cane, the insane killer clown who drives an ice cream truck is the most twisted character in twisted metal. A perfect model for our character.

We were heavily influenced in designing our clowns mask based on Sweet Tooth's likeness. A second murderous clown with a lust for blood and mayhem was another great addition for the inspiration behind our killer.

Our film is unlike any other slasher film. We combined elements of the slasher genre and fused them with neo-noir. Our films atmosphere and aesthetic take major influences from movies such as, David Fincher's, SEVEN, which inspired some of the mood elements for the film.

Master composer, Vangelis, who created the score for Blade Runner heavily influenced the tone and ambience of the film. The musical scores composition helped with the pacing for scenes in the film.

Blade Runner's rainsoaked meloncoly overtones played another factor in the films design.

Memento's writing and direction is outstanding. Similarly, we wanted to portray a puzzle that needed unraveling to our audience.

Momento's a unique detective story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It keeps you guessing and intrigued as the events unfold. We wanted to use similar techniques to captivate our audience until the very last frame hits the screen.

About This Team

About Director Chris Marciante:

At the early age of six, my passion for story telling began. Creating my own little theatre shows using puppets and toys to entertain my grandparents. "You are going to be a famous director like Steven Spielberg", my grandma would say, which resonates with me to this day. Discovering JAWS at 10 years old would be the leading inspiration behind my love and obsession for film. As I grew, so did my interest in theatre and film production. I used to look forward to weekend blockbuster trips with my dad, where I would convince him to rent me a variety of tapes, which included Robocop, Terminator, Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween.  I would watch them on repeat, intrigued by how they were made. The suspense, gore, special effects, story and characters is how I knew making films was what I wanted to do. Creating home videos, skits and short movies, soon became my most desired hobby and my true calling. At around 20 years of age, I took a more professional direction, creating more narrative short films and skits, which some to this day have survived and can still be found on YouTube. I eventually created my own independent film production company called Guerrilla Revolution Productions, primarily focusing on horror films. This led to later creating the VAULT FILM FESTIVAL, which showcased work by various filmmakers from all over the world within the sci-fi and horror genres. To date I have worked on several award-winning projects and have broken into film and television production, gaining considerable experience working on set as a background production assistant for major TV and film networks. My resume includes Marvel's Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Dare Devil, and many more but most recently Apple TV's, We Crashed. Currently, I am developing a new script for my next project, while looking forward to releasing Last Laugh to the world. I am incredibly grateful for my filmmaking journey thus far. I leave you with one of my favorite directors' quotes, "There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it" - Alfred Hitchcock. I greatly anticipate what's to come!
