The Story
When Maya and Hope try to sneak in to their mom's funeral uninvited they come face to face with some funny deranged characters from their past and the reasons why they left. While some family members are happily surprised others are not so excited. And when they see their sister, Cara-Lynn drama ensues, putting the spotlight on Maya and Hope, to speak their peace. From alcoholic ex step- dads, best friends named Squirrel, and a cheek pinchin' Aunt Cheryl, this cast of characters is sure to make you laugh, make you cry, and remind you of why you got out in the first place. Written and directed by Yasmeen Magar, this story deals with complex grief, generational trauma, and the love between two sisters who held on tight and never let go.
Late To Mom's Funeral focuses on complicated family dynamics. Between bickering sisters, crazy aunts and out of touch ex-lovers, we've got you covered.
Picture a mix of southern charm, eccentric family members and unfiltered eulogies.
We love the heart of Steel Magnolias, the quick quips of Fleabag, an unconventional and vibrant family from Little Miss Sunshine, and the country-fried charm with a trailer park edge from My Name is Earl.
Grief is messy, families messier. Through the eyes of Maya, we see her deal with the grief of her mother privately. She doesn't want to make a fuss or a scene. For her to really express her feelings is a big step in her own self expression. Her sister Hope presses her and pushes her buttons and finally Maya must speak about her own experiences. She has to revel in the uncomfortable feeling of sharing her thoughts and her experiences with her own mom. Not only do we see Maya commit to her own emotions but its a moment we root for her and establish that her big messy feelings are a universal experience we can all share.
Through this film, we aim to offer a space for healing and reflection, and to foster a sense of community among viewers who may be grappling with their own experiences of loss and trauma. Humor is used as a way lighten the mood and relieve tension. In the midst of family drama or the grieving process, finding moments of levity can help to ease the heaviness of the situation.
We believe that cinema has the power to bring people together and to promote empathy, and we are committed to using this medium to spark meaningful conversations about the issues that matter most to us.
