We're excited to present a compelling and artful short film that intertwines surrealism with psychological thriller elements, to shed light on a rarely-explored topic: the conflict within ourselves. As the world grapples with increasing mental health concerns, now more than ever, we need films that resonate deeply, inspire conversations and encourage empathy towards mental health issues.
The Story:
Our story follows S, a seamstress tormented by her dreams of a moth Yokai, as she navigates a literal and symbolic maze to confront the creature and free herself from the psychological labyrinth that mirrors her inner struggles. It's a symbolic journey that represents the complex struggle many face when dealing with mental health issues, providing a fresh, metaphoric perspective on self-doubt and existential fear.

About This Team
Huiru Shi — Writer/Director
Huiru's passion for visual storytelling was nurtured from a young age. Growing up in a strict household where television was off-limits, watching movies was like a sacred ritual that she could indulge in.
After moving to Canada, Huiru obtained her BDes in advertising at OCAD University followed by a Fashion Technique & Design diploma at George Brown College where Huiru discovered her deep love for visual storytelling. She has many diverse interests, including art history, painting, literature, philosophy… Yet, it is through creative expression that she finds the utmost joy. Huiru eventually realized that her true passion still lies in filmmaking and storytelling. Since then she has worked as Production Designer, Art Director, and Costume Designer on several short film sets.

Molten Core Media is a dynamic and innovative film production company founded by three visionary filmmakers: Saad Kanwar, Karn Litah, and Sidd Suresh. Amar Shinde — Line Producer
As a citizen of a developing country (India), Amar grew up witnessing major technological advancements in close proximity and opted for a Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering from Rajarambapu Institute of Technology (RIT). He later realized his skills would be better employed in the world of film and television, which led him to acquire a Post Graduate Diploma in Filmmaking with a specialization in Direction from MIT School of Film and Television.
Marching ahead, Amar directed two narrative short films, a music video and a short documentary and worked with Dilip Ghosh Productions Pvt. Ltd in Mumbai as an assistant director. He also worked as a freelance screenwriter, director, and video editor for other production houses and celebrated filmmakers; Drishyam Communications, Film and Television Institute of India and Jabbar Patel to name a few. Amar is currently studying at the Toronto Film School and has worked on multiple thesis films, including writing and directing his own film, Lost in Eden.
Han Liu — Director of Photography
Before stepping into the film industry, Han Liu graduated from OCAD University with a BFA in photography.
He used to work as a photographer and a lens-based artist who exhibited his work across galleries in Toronto.
The fine-art experiences shaped his minimal and elegant style as a visual storyteller. After finding his true passion for filmmaking, Han pursued a more comprehensive education at the Toronto Film School. He quickly grasped the role of cinematographer and participated in numerous projects inside and outside Toronto Film School.
Rachana Shinde — First Assistant Director
Rachana is a talented and accomplished individual with a passion for filmmaking and a strong background in video production. With a Diploma in Film Production from Toronto Film School, she possesses a comprehensive understanding of the industry.
With five years of experience as an Assistant Director in India, Rachana has demonstrated her versatility and expertise on various projects. Her adaptability allows her to seamlessly transition between different roles and responsibilities, contributing to the smooth running of productions. Her organizational skills play a crucial role in ensuring efficient workflows and fostering effective collaboration among team members.
Rachana's dedication to her craft, combined with her knowledge and creative vision, make her a valuable asset on any film set. Her ability to adapt to dynamic situations and overcome challenges enables her to contribute to the success of each project she undertakes.
Natali Trivuncic — Production Designer
Natali Trivuncic is a talented production designer known for her exceptional creativity and meticulous attention to detail. As the production designer for “Lei,” Natali has poured her artistic vision into crafting immersive and visually striking sets. Before her involvement in “Lei,” Natali honed her skills and deepened her love for production design during her time at the Toronto Film School. It was there that she discovered her passion for creating immersive worlds and designing sets that evoke emotion and enhance storytelling.
Natali’s talent extends beyond “Lei” to a rich portfolio of short films where she showcased her set design abilities. In addition to her work in short films, Natali has also lent her skills as a set dresser to commercial projects. Her keen eye for aesthetics and ability to transform spaces to reflect the brand’s identity have made her an asset in the world of advertising.
Her passion for storytelling, honed through her education and hands-on experience, infuses every project she undertakes with a distinct and captivating visual identity.
Emma Duong Tran as 'S'
Growing up in Hanoi, Vietnam, Emma moved to Toronto In September 2021 to pursue her Bachelor’s Degree in Creative Industries, focusing on Acting/Dance Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University.
Emma has a background in dancing, and her favorite dance genre is Hip Hop. For this reason, she fell in love with the power to express herself and tell stories through performing, which led her to develop her passion for acting in high school. However, since she was too shy to admit her love for acting, along with her struggle to find acting opportunities back in her home country, it was not until her first year in university did she take acting seriously and auditioned for various roles. So far, she has been in one music video and five student short films. Emma also assisted in a few film and commercial productions and interned at a film company to explore more roles she could do in the business of film.
As the leading actress in Lei, Emma resonates deeply with the script and hopes to deliver a performance that will evoke audience empathy. While this is not the first time that the character she plays has no speaking lines, she still finds the role quite challenging, but at the same time, it allows her to apply her background in dancing to portray a multi-layered character. Emma believes that it is necessary to have more quality Asian representation on screen. Therefore, she is grateful to become a part of this journey and be able to portray an Asian character in an Asian-cultural-aesthetic-inspired film.
