The Story

Jen West, Writer & Director:
Independent film is a huge part of my life. Since making my first short film in 2006 (Piece of Cake), the process has been ingrained in my soul. If I'm not working on a film - whether conceptualizing, writing, directing or overseeing the entire process - then I am eagerly looking for the next project to work on. At this point in my career, there are many stories waiting to be told. That's why it's extra special that Little Cabbage was selected to be our next short film to create. Not only is Little Cabbage the most intense script I've ever written, it spawned an entire feature film called Electric Bleau that we hope to make in 2015. This is why I love making films - not only does it require the ultimate combination of creativy, from concept to execution, it also requires strategic thinking and expert planning. With three short films and a successful music video under my belt, I absolutely can't wait to get the opportunity to make this movie. We need your help though. As with all of our projects, we personally invest a great deal ourselves. Films are an expensive endeavor, but a worthwhile cause as it brings communities together like nothing else. The money you donate will go towards paying local crew in Atlanta, Georgia and Birmingham, Alabama, as well as talent from as far as New York City. Your donation helps us pay for equipment that will make our film look worthy of being on a big screen. It helps us feed our crew and talent to keep their spirits high. $10,000 may seem like a lot, and it certainly is, but we can think of few things greater than backing a dream. We appreciate any contribution, large or small, and other proactive gestures such as sharing and shout-outs. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts - we know we will make you proud. I am excited to see my words in action!

James Martin, Producer:
I stumbled into making independent films by way of documentary work, when I toured the south to ask artists why they chose to stay in the region instead of moving to bigger cities like New York or LA. It was on this trip that I met Jen West for the first time in Birmingham, Alabama. I was in town filming her best friend Vero (an amazing artist), and we happened to sit beside each other at a dinner... the rest is history! It wasn't soon after that we dove head first into making our first short film together, called Bubble. It was such an important experience for me, and I realized on that project that I had the chops to be an effective producer. I love working with Jen and I am so excited to produce Little Cabbage alongside her. Starting out one of the biggest things I had to wrap my mind around was the cost involved in making movies. I work really hard to fine tune our budgets, trying to find that balance of paying people for their time & energy, but also making sure the project can survive. The ultimate goal is for there to be a finished film - a product of the creativity of dozens of people, and a little piece of history representative of the team who make it happen. Once we are gone, we are remembered by our culture through creative contributions. Little Cabbage is a little piece of our souls that we can give to the world. Thank you so very much for anything you can give - as Jen said, nothing is too large or small. We are so happy to make this film with you, our community of supporters!
