The Story

9-year-old Ellie Williams pretends to be sick from school so she can sneak out and venture by bus to visit her veteran father’s memorial on his birthday. She takes her Uncle George, an un-housed man, as her chaperone.
Ellie has planned the perfect celebration for her dad, but everything goes wrong from a broken cake, loud noise, uncontrollable weather, to her uncle wanting to leave before singing “happy birthday”. Ellie must give up control and work with unfavorable circumstances in order to celebrate her dad.

LOVE, FROM ELLIE is a heartfelt and emotionally resonant story that beautifully captures the themes of grief, remembrance, and the enduring power of love through the eyes of a resilient 9-year-old girl. The story also sheds a compassionate light on the repercussions that families endure when a loved one in the military loses their life in the line of duty to their country. A story that we don’t often see represented in film and one that is very relevant to so many on a global scale.

The story was inspired by walks in my neighborhood and my interactions with a homeless/un-housed man who was living by a dumpster near a strip mall. He was a kind man and would always smile and wave to me and my dog as we passed by. We started chatting on a regular basis and I began to wonder about the turn of events that led him to be homeless. This man was the inspiration behind George’s character.

Around the same time I became pregnant with my daughter June, and as all expecting parents do, I started to realize the massive impact a parent has on a kids life. I started to become overwhelmed by the responsibility and it made me think about how important it is for my daughter to have healthy relationships and role models in her life. And I began thinking about the homeless man in my neighborhood and how maybe his life might've been different if his circumstances had been different.

LOVE, FROM ELLIE highlights that we are all so different but there are certain events in our lives that bring and bind us together; our grief and our loss, our triumphs and our wins. This story makes us realize our shared humanity and that we're a lot more connected than we think.

The tone of the movie is on the lighter side. Although it is a drama, there's a lot of comedy in this story and it frequently flips from sadness to laughter. We are looking at the world through the eyes of a 9-year-old girl. Emotions are heightened, colors are brighter, moments sweeter.
In my personal experience, grief is uncomfortable, isolating, and unpredictable. It's a roller coaster of emotions. As humans we try our best to move forward and not get stuck in the pain, we want to feel happy. I wanted to create a film that shows the way we grieve and how life can be both heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time.
The screenplay for LOVE, FROM ELLIE has already made a splash on the festival circuit, winning the Phoenix Film Festival Short Screenplay Competition 2024, and Reel East Texas Film Festival Best Contest Short Screenplay 2023!
