The Story
The Story
Layla is just another girl passing through the same struggles we as immigrants have all had to pass through to stay in the United States, only finding defeated expectations and dreams, to be part of a family where we do not belong.
Matters of the heart get brushed aside to do what is necessary to survive in this country. This is shown through Layla's choice between Jake and Diego. Jake represents the 'stability and freedom' while shutting down Layla's true self. Whereas Diego represents Layla's past and a future that is no longer possible. Therefore Layla must choose to face the future alone or forever be caught in a false version of herself.
We, as immigrants, want to carry the memory of our homes with us through our lives, but the truth is, what we remember as our home no longer exists. They are just memories. Once we accept that our land, our home, is within us and we can take it wherever we want, we will be truly free no matter where we are.
To find happiness in herself, Layla will have to detach from her past and embrace an unknown future.

The Impact
In today's world, it's incredibly important to support and empower immigrant women to stand up for themselves. We hope to use this film to not only showcase a female perspective, but to empower other women and immigrant's to tell their stories. The filmmaking industry is a powerful outlet and now, more than ever, is women's opportunity to share their voice with the world.
Director's Statement
As a woman filmmaking student, I see my future with an optimistic view and the hope to become a successful director. There is a lack of awareness in this industry and inclusion of women in our craft. Sadly, this lack of inclusion is not only aimed toward women, but immigrants as well.
Simply put, as an immigrant you are forced to work twice as hard, with one hand tied behind your back, to make less than the minimum wage in one of the richest countries in the world. Immigrants have always been the first to invest in this country, and at the same time have suffered the worst consequences simply because they are not Americans. Inhuman immigration laws have forced millions of immigrants to constantly live in degrading situatioins and I just happened to live one of those experiences.
