Mission Statement

This film is an abstraction and experimentation of personal experiences with illness and grief. Although it deals with dark themes the goal of Maligna is to show the beauty of the horror genre, and how feminine the genre truly is.

The Story

Maligna is a experimental horror, taking from 80's aesthetics and Giallo horror films. This film is a visual abstraction of feelings associated with illness and grief.

It follows Veronica, a young girl, and some of her friends who act as a representation of her dealings with grief. It's a thriller, a horror, a visual story, all through a woman's point of view. This short is not only an abstraction of feelings, but an experimentation with practical and visual effects. It is a higly art driven film which tries to merge a line between nightmare and reality.

This film is aesthetically inspired by classic 80's films such as Hellraiser (1987), The Fly (1986), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). It also draws from Italian horror films like Suspiria (1977), Dario Argento being a huge inspiration for the overall aesthetics of the film. Although it does take from the 80's aesthetic it is set in an unknown time period like the film It Follows. This meaning that it could be set in any time period but might not be from the world we currently know.

Hi, I'm Vikki! The writer and director of Maligna. I'm a Colombian born filmmaker and photographer with a passion of expressing my thoughts and ideas through art. Maligna carries meaning beyond what can be written down. It is a story inspired by my own experience with cancer and what it did to me mentally and physically. It is a representation of all feelings that I went through while discovering I had ovarian cancer and the inner battle figuring out how to cope and accept the situation. I can proudly say I am cancer free and happy to share my experience through such a unique and expressive medium.

Why help?

This is an independent short film by a first time female director. Being independent on any level is difficult, so any help not only supports this one film, but inspires others to fund more low budget independent films! The genre being a horror it also lets me as a woman dive into such a male dominated genre. In general I would love to see more women diving deep into the horror genre and getting to show beautiful feminine stories while experimenting with fear and thrill. One of the many goals of this film is not only to be made, but to inspire other female or young filmmakers who think they might not be able to make their art without huge budgets.

Although we want to create a professional and serious film set, we are aware of current times and want to make a safe place for everyone involved. Due to COVID-19, we had delayed production until we felt it appropriate to shoot safely. Some of the crowd funding money will definitely go towards having a sanitized and safe environment for everyone involved.

What we need...

So as far as production goes, we still have a ways to go. This campaign will help each of our departments get the any items they need. As a team, we want everyone to stand on equal footing and for anyone involved to have the resources they need. We want our art team to have the funds to aquire props, wardrobe, and makeup without a worry. Our hope is to also have any camera equipment funded so we don't have to rely on rental houses to get our equipment. We want to have good craft services for both cast and crew. Since we are unable to pay anyone on our team, we want to repay them with the best and healthiest food we can.

These are just a few things we have on our plate thus far, but this campaign is truly the start to making Maligna come to life!

We hope to film in fall 2021 and submit to festivals in summer 2022. After the festival runs, we will release the film for public view.
