Mannequin is a heightened look at how suppressing "unnatural" emotions can take a tole on our psychology. Help us be a part in breaking the mold society has created around gender-specific sexuality and raise social awareness.

Mission Statement

Mannequin’s central theme confronts how we punish ourselves for being different than others - especially with sexuality. Written & Directed by a sexually fluid filmmaker, Mannequin studies a man who internalizes his non-gender specific sexuality and how hiding these emotions can distort the psyche.

The Story

We all want to be able to express ourselves freely without any consequence but what if you feel different than everybody else? What if society told you that you were wrong and that the feelings you had were unnatural – maybe even evil?

MANNEQUIN is a short film that studies sexuality and its surrounding social anxieties. Our protagonist, a tailor who designs his own clothing, struggles with his feelings, and fantasizes about the mannequins occupying his workspace. As they come to life, his fantasies drive him to venture out into society longing to make human connection. However, upon leaving his house, he comes to find that only mannequins occupy the world around him. He begins losing grip on what is reality, when he comes face to face with another human… but how will he react?

Writer and Director Ian Mantel hopes to capture the anxiety that breathes heavily down your neck while coming to terms with a sexual preference outside the social norm. Identifying sexually fluid, Ian struggled in his youth to find his own acceptance within, and in turn would shelter himself from others in fear of judgment.

Ian has created this protagonist who also struggles in similar fears and reflects the harm one can inflict on themselves (and others) by internalizing those emotions. Written without dialogue, Mannequin emulates the societal pressure boxing in LGBTQ youth, and the damage it can cause to one’s psyche.
