Mission Statement

Australia is a nation forever grappling with its history, forged by a violent, colonial past. By setting our story in the fallout from the terrifyingly real British nuclear testing program, we're building on a long tradition of quality Aussie horror to explore our country's original sin.

The Story

Things are easily forgotten in the Outback.

It's 1983 and everyone is looking for teenage hitchhiker Sydney McCready. A month ago, she disappeared in the Outback... never to be heard from again.

Husband/wife duo Bill and Marsha Bundy believe they are close to finding Sydney. Harboring grand literary ambitions, in the vein of Truman Capote and James Ellroy, the couple hopes to find fame and fortune as true crime writers, their careers won off the back of Sydney McCready's disappearance.

Are they ready for the truth?

Sneaking into Maralinga, an abandoned military testing site deep in the South Australian desert, they set up camp and start searching for the missing girl.

Over the ensuing days they uncover a chilling conspiracy theory, involving the British Army and a clandestine nuclear testing program. And then, just when it seems like they're out of leads, they receive a visitor in the middle of the night...

Global tensions on the rise... the re-examination of our history... a hunger for quality true crime content...

It is the perfect time to treat our audience to a challenging & entertaining deep-dive into a forgotten chapter of the Cold War.

Building on the imagery of Cold War science fiction and conspiracies, as well as 1970s horror (e.g. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and post-apocalyptic works like the Fallout games... MARALINGA will be a visual throwback to the 20th century.

We plan on giving it a gritty, beautiful-but-deadly, highly saturated style that is perfect for its blend of true crime, horror and Cold War paranoia.

INFLUENCES: '70s Horror, Cold War Sci-Fi & Conspiracy

THE BUDGET

We're looking for $10,000 in total so that we can make this film the best it can possibly be. Some of our biggest spends include:

  • Arri Alexa Mini. This is a professional, cinema-grade camera... the kind they used to film Joker, 1917 and many other Hollywood pictures
  • Labor costs. We want to pay for the talent we're getting - given the commitment we're asking for (and expecting) from our crew, it's only right we pay them
  • Post-production work. We don't want to shoot the film and have nothing to show for it... contributions will go a long way to ensuring a high quality export
