The Story
Great question, thank you for asking. "Matt and Dan" is a gay a sketch comedy webseries in the vein of Key and Peele or Portlandia, from the minds of comedians Matthew Wilkas and Daniel Vincent Gordh. Each episode exists in its own universe, and introduces us to Matt and Dan as new characters and in new situations. Every genre-bending episode descends into absurdity, whether Matt and Dan are playing two indie filmmakers trying to raise money for their new experimental film ("Please Donate"), or whether they are playing friends competing for the most dramatic moment with a dying friend ("Deathbead"). If you haven't watched Matt and Dan Season 1 already, you can watch it on their youtube channel HERE.
Matt and Dan Season One screened (or is slated to screen) at Framleline Film Festival in San Francisco, Out on Film Atlanta Film Festival, The Barcelona International LGTIB Film Festival, Queer Screen Film Festival in Sydney, Australia, The International Queer Film Festival in Hamburg, The Reel Pride Film Festival in Fresno, The Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival, The Tampa Bay International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, the Way Out West Film Festival in New Mexico, and the Desperado LGBT Film Festival in Phoenix. Season One has also been featured on Towleroad.com, Out.com, Pride.com, and Instinct Magazine and Matt and Dan appeared on "Watch What Happens Live" with Andy Cohen to promote the show! (Clip of us on the HERE.)
Matt and Dan met while taking improv class at The Groundlings back in 2014. When Matt first met Daniel he thought, “Who IS this cute/funny/smart little monster and how can I become his friend”? Eventually friendship was unavoidable as they realized they were true kindred spirits.
They became roommates off and on after that and started making silly instagram videos and eventually got to a place where making a project like "Matt and Dan" was long overdue.
Over the course of roughly a year, Matt and Dan shot the seven episodes that comprise Season One. It was not a super easy process, with many stumbles along the way... Matt lives primarily in NYC and the series was shot in LA where Dan lives... So needless to say, schedules and locations and money all needed to be juggled... But truly none of Season One could have been possible without the help of Dan's big beautiful talented brother Will Gordh.
Will took on the role of not only Director for Season One, but he was also DP, sound, gaffer, script coordinater, adviser, AND LITERAL SAVIOUR. Will is truly the best brother Dan could have.
We never outwardly intended to make our channel an LGBTQ one, we just both happen to be gay and we consciously decided not to edit ourselves when it came to our gayness. There have been many times when, as a writers, we chose to make characters or situations “straight” in order to make them more marketable or sellable. But with “Matt and Dan” we really don’t give a shit. And actually it’s so much more fun and freeing to just be ourselves in this.
We certianly do not expect to change the world or start a revolution, but we do believe that COMEDY has the incredible power to bring people together, which is perhaps more important now than it has ever been before. Honestly if we can bring joy and laughter to anyone who might be having a terrible day, then we have done something fantastic.
We shot "Matt and Dan Season 1" using our own resources and funds, but we can't afford to make a Season 2 without your help! Money raised through this campaign will afford us everything from securing locations, renting equipment, costumes, food, props, transportation and paying actors and crew. It will also help us with all of the post production elements like editing, sound mixing and funds for festival submissions and channel promotion. We are committed to making HIGH QUALITY sketch comedy, and that just costs money, so... We need your help!
Our goal is the bare minimum we need to bring you Matt & Dan Season Two. But filmmaking is expensive, any additional funds we raise over the goal will help us make Season 2 bigger and better and more, you know, awesome.
$1,500 Above our goal - We will be able to add a special Behind the Scenes Bonus Video!
$3,000 Above our goal - We will be able to do a very special Matt & Dan photoshoot that will blow your mind!
$5,000 Above our goal - We' be able to add a sorely needed ASSISTANT DIRECTOR to our crew!
$10,000 Above our goal - We will bring you a special CHRISTMAS EPISODE of Matt & Dan season 2!
$15,000 Above our goal - We will bring yet ANOTHER OTHER episode of Matt & Dan season 2! With this we could make a TEN episode second season!
$30,000 Above our goal - We will not only bring you a full 10 episode second season of Matt & Dan, but we will also shoot an original Matt & Dan feature film trailer!
$200,000 Above our goal - We will drop everything and make a feature film Matt & Dan movie instead. That's right, a goddamn Matt & Dan MOVIE.
We don't just need your money! So, if you don't have any money to contribue right now--THAT'S OK! You can still help! By sharing this crowdfunding campaign with your friends and family on social media, you are doing more than enough! Thank you so very much!
