"...Mom Died" is a surreal dark comedy that examines how ever evolving familial dynamics can be put on blast during times of crisis. The film gives voice to the sentiments that often go unsaid in life changing situations by elevating thoughts we often deem as selfish or improper through comedy!

Mission Statement

I'm Zach, the writer/director of ...Mom Died. In my work, I'm always interested in bringing what would normally go unsaid to life. This film is a distillation of my family's experience when our mother had a near fatal freak accident, though the "what the fuck-edness" of the situation is universal.

The Story

THANK YOU FOR GETTING US TO OUR PRIMARY GOAL! NOW, ON TO OUR STRETCH GOAL OF $11,000!!!

Based on an all too true story...

A version of this story happened to me and my sister. About eight years ago, my mother randomly tripped and hit her head. She was rushed to the hospital where she underwent emergency neurological surgery to drain a brain bleed. It was an absolute freak accident. She actually almost died, but incredibly, made a full recovery and is absolutely thriving today! How cute is she?!?

To make matter more complicated...this all happened about 5 months after my mother and father separated after being together for 35 years, so my sister and I took center stage during this freakin' catastrophe. While this short film is fiction, it's inspired by that experience and extrapolated from some of the vast array of thoughts and emotions I felt but didn't vocalize at the time. After long enough, I finally decided to process this event in the best way I knew how...by turning it into comedy.

This is where it all went down...Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY.

MOM, IF YOU'RE READING THIS...it bears repeating that that this is a comedic extrapolation of our experience! While this story is based on a real situation, the characters in the film are FICTITIOUS! (Don't worry, everyone! We got her blessing before embarking on this creative endeavor!)

...MOM DIED is a narrative short film set in the not so inherently comedic location of a hospital waiting room. It's a dark comedy that sits in with a Sister and Brother who are anxiously awaiting the results of their mother's emergency neurological surgery. For the siblings, who are in their early twenties, this is the most harrowing experience of their young lives. While the underlying fear of potentially losing their mother is ever present as a tonal baseline, the film explores some of the more logistical and practical thoughts that come to these siblings as they helplessly sit with eachother. ...MOM DIED gives voice to the sentiments that often go unsaid in these sorts of life changing situations. It seeks to elevate those often selfish or improper thoughts through comedy.

Oh yeah, and to make matters more complicated, their very recently estranged father is in the room with them.

This short film is about how ridiculous, and inherently funny, it is to ask two young people to grow up and take on a caregiving role in a matter of moments. It examines being lost in a situation so intense that you have no choice but to accept your reactions for what they are and lean on those around you. And if this doesn't seem funny to you quite yet, please, take my word for it!

We wanted to make something that was honest, universal, and funny...and maybe allow people to give themselves a break in times of crisis. Everyone experiences trauma in one form or another, and right now that notion feels all too prescient. When we do, our mind goes to unusual places. Damn, our mind goes to unusual places even when we DON'T experience trauma. Our minds are bizarre, beautiful miracles! Unpacking all that goes on upstairs through the use of comedy can be a very useful tool as we go through the ups and downs of life!

This film seeks to explore the parts of ourselves that we don't really want to talk about, because at the end of the day, we ALL have those icky partys and the fact that we do (unless you're some sort of ridiculous angel) makes it OK! Not to get too heady, but we have always been interested in the process of legitimizing emotions, because if you're feeling it and thinking it, it's legit! At least, that's what my therapist tells me!

The idea is to turn this into a feature! As you can imagine, this story goes WAY beyond the hospital waiting room. The treatment for the feature version of this is already written, and executing this short in the best way we can will hopefully get people excited about the feature to come!

We've shot the whole darn film already! But we want you to get involved so we can continue to edit it, make it look prettier and sound better!  All of the funds we raise at this point will be going to post production and the it's life beyond the edit! Here is the breakdown for our primary goal.

We also have a stretch goal that will help us with getting this thing in front of people as the best piece that it can be...

And if you can't contribute...we get it! We still love you! Plus, there are other ways you can support the film like getting "Mom Died" tattooed on your chest! In seriousness, to hit our fundraising goal, we'll need to reach people far and wide, so you can share our page on social media, and tell family, friends, or random people you meet in a coffee shop about us! We're just thrilled you made it all the way to this part of our page honestly!!!

Here's an example of what you can share on social media:
