The Story

The story follows Bruna who is upset and home alone for the holidays when she is surprised by her situationship, Ethan. He arrives with gifts and charms, hoping to cheer her up. She lets him and one thing leads to another – except it’s against her will. She relives this night as a strange Creature haunts her, reminding her of what has happened.

Bruna is a 19 year old Brazilian sophomore college student. Hard-working and fiercely independent, her trust is hard to earn but once she feels comfortable, she is easily overwhelmed by her emotions.
Her relationship to Ethan is more than friends-with-benefits but less than a relationship. She’s expressed her need for more and he’s receptive but stubborn. He doesn’t like being told what to do.

Ethan is a 21 year old senior college student. He is “Mr. Nice Guy,” unsuspecting, a real charmer. He’s polite, says all the right things but never actually does anything.

A half-woman, half-demon, the Creature is from another world. She is a determined protector, attracted to (and can literally smell) pain. Her intentions are to absorb her victims’ pain (so they never have to feel it or remember it).
The Visuals / The Style

Shame Associated with Rape
The narrative around assault and rape remain to be tainted with shame. It’s difficult to obtain accurate global statistics because many survivors don’t report due to a variety of reasons, including victim shaming, embarrassment, fear of reprisal from the perpetrator, fear of not being believed or insufficient laws.
Rapist = Always a Stranger
There is a consistent narrative that a rapist is a stranger, someone you’ve never had a previous (sexual) relationship with.
While in many cases that is true, in the U.S. 70% of rapes are committed by someone the victim knows. No one thinks that their partner or relative can do it, until it happens.
And when it happens with someone you know, you often wonder if it actually did happen because you compare it to how it is represented in films and the media. It may have not been as violent, as aggressive or as graphic, but you can tell it was wrong because you no longer feel like yourself after it happened.
“Monster” is a film that will challenge the audience’s attitude towards rape and sexual assault. It will provide a much-needed compassionate spotlight to a topic that is so commonly spoken about yet so difficult to listen to. It will be an outlet that transforms silence into a voice and shame into empowerment.
"Monster" is a film that will make you look inwards and be understanding with yourself and your own pain.

We are currently in pre-production and will be in production mid-September.
To reach our production goals, we need to raise $4,000. The cast and the crew are volunteering their time, meaning the raised funds will be allocated for equipment, transportation, food, AMAZING SFX, props, set design, and other production expenses.
Once the film is completed, we plan on submitting to film festivals by the end of the year.

Director/Writer: Ana Hummes Ota
Ana Hummes Ota is a filmmaker and screenwriter based in New York City who identifies as a Third Culture Kid. Born in Porto Alegre, Brazil to a Brazilian mother and Brazilian-Japanese father, Ana grew up around the world in Brazil, China, Germany and Malaysia. Her multi-cultural background inspires her female-driven stories that explore themes of belonging and cultural identity in a globalized world.
Inspired by Jordan Peele and Bong Joon Ho, as a writer and director Ana uses psychological and social horror to explore her own traumas and how it influences her relationship with herself and with others around her. While her stories attempt to answer what it means to belong as an individual, they also simultaneously explore what it means to belong in a relationship, in a family or in a group. As a filmmaker, Ana enjoys combining experimental visual and auditory techniques with traditional filmmaking to both shock and connect the audience to her stories.
Producer: Jacob Alexander Augustin
Jacob Alexander Augustin is a multi-hyphenate creator based in New York City trying to change the world one person at a time, one story at a time. He explores different creative fields such as writing, directing, producing, and acting. He’s appeared in No Hard Feelings and Blue Bloods, and has written and produced many projects through his production company, Black Noise.
Director of Photography: Rowan Cassandra Lin
Rowan Cassandra Lin is a Trans and Taiwanese cinematographer who works in strongly political, visceral and intimate narratives. She is especially interested in diving into the intricacies of intersectional identities and loves exploring and tinkering with varied visual technique. She has shot over a hundred productions in narrative and experimental film, as well as commercial projects. Lin takes great care in picking apart the undercurrents of the characters and narratives she works with, embracing the subtleties of emotion and the inner world of each player. Her visual language is born of a deep understanding of people, focusing on function through feeling and an adoration of complexities.
Rowan is an award winning director of photography who works in strongly political, visceral and intimate narratives.
