Mission Statement

Our goal? To create a queer, raunchy, female-led film that's full of heart! We want to give life to a Black female protagonist who has the space and agency to be a 3-dimensional character... without all her struggles being centered around identity and race.

The Story

Munchies is a fun, fast-paced crime comedy that follows an estranged high school clique as they reunite for a summer girl's night where Lennon, Tessa, Ronnie, and Mack get high together like old times.

Their sleepover takes a hilariously dark turn when junk food cravings land them in the middle of a botched convenience store robbery. Despite becoming hostages, the girls are still stoned as f*ck. They must squash their giggles and outsmart the robber to escape alive.

Why this story?

Munchies is a coming-of-age story, combining the heart of movies like Booksmart and Edge of Seventeen, with the raunchier stoner comedy of movies like Project X or Superbad. Unlike many coming-of-age films, Munchies has a Black queer woman at its center without her identity being a problem or a source of conflict. At its core, Munchies shows both the beauty and camaraderie that comes with female friendship, as well as the friction that can accompany it. The film explores the central theme that what is done in the dark always comes to light.

Visual Style

Bright contemporary colors muted by a gritty film look, fluorescent lighting, unrelenting movement, and rhythmic pacing with a nostalgic nod to teen coming-of-age films.

The Breakdown

The film has not been cast or shot, the teaser is only for concept purposes.

We are currently in the early stages of pre-production. Our goal is to film Munchies in late March 2024 in NYC. We will begin submitting to festivals in the fall.

Our budget of $14,000 will go towards a 4 day shoot covering the 13 page script. The bulk of the funds will help cover the convenience store location cost. The rest will be divided between compensating and feeding cast/crew, equipment rentals, production design, and insurance.

About This Team

WRITER/DIRECTOR

Formerly a Division 1 lacrosse student athlete at the University of Delaware, Brittany Alexia Young followed her passion for filmmaking and received her M.F.A from Florida State's College of Motion Picture Arts. Though she's known for her motor mouth, Brittany lets the camera speak for itself when telling stories - starting with her purple iPod Nano, and graduating to cine cameras. She spreads joy in conversation, with her sarcastic run-ons and punchlines, and weaves pieces of herself into her art.

PRODUCTION DESIGNER

Grown in Palm Coast, Florida, Connie O’Connor knew she wanted to be a filmmaker when she saw how hot all of the actors in her favorite YA book to movie adaptations were. She is a recent graduate of Florida State University’s College of Motion Picture Arts and lives in New York City, where she hopes to keep telling stories by, with, and about women. She currently works in the Art Department of a Paramount TV show, and has designed and art directed numerous short films and music videos. Connie is so excited to Production Design “Munchies” because she’s also a girl who gets high sometimes.

DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Mario Martinez developed his storytelling abilities by listening to his family folklore of the land. His love of storytelling and curiosity about the camera led to his decision to pursue cinematography. Mario has captured stories from the desert mountains of New Mexico to the swampy forests of Florida, studying cinematography at FSU’s College of Motion Picture Arts and at NMSU’s Creative Media Institute. He has been the Cinematographer of 11 short films and has worked in the camera department on both narrative and documentary features.

PRODUCER

Jaelyn Ellis is an NYC based producer and director who is committed to bringing stories to the screen that uplift marginalized and underrepresented voices. She received her BFA in Film Production from Florida State University, where she was a recipient of the 2022 Future of Film is Female grant for promising work, strong visual language, and inventiveness in narratives. She has produced short films and music videos that have premiered at festivals such as FrightFest, Out on Film, and the National Film Festival for Talented Youth.
