The Story

Abel plans to sabotage his father David’s wedding by giving a disparaging toast. While rehearsing his speech in the bathroom, Abel encounters Travis, his 9-year-old future stepbrother, secretly playing in the linen closet. Abel forges a connection with Travis. Wrestling with conflicting emotions, Abel has to decide whether to go through with his planned sabotage.

This is a story for anyone who has ever felt left out or betrayed. It is about family. As a child, Abel had little choice over his circumstances. But now, he wrestles with choices about which parts of himself—shaped by his upbringing—he wants to keep, let go of, or change. Abel’s story invites us to explore the possibility of change at a time when so much seems intractable.

Abel: An aspiring stand-up comic. Talented. Wounded. Toxically self-sufficient. Feels that if he were to disappear, no one would notice.
David: An abusively neglectful father to Abel. Wants a new beginning with his new family without confronting his past. Yearns to reconnect with Abel but is stuck figuring out how.
Travis: Perceptive. Nerdy. A storyteller and chess enthusiast. Always listening. An outcast.
Priscilla: David’s bride-to-be and Travis’ mother. Wholesome with a sunny disposition. An impetus to David's desire to reconnect with Abel.

He is the creative director for Row, a single-player RPG video game inspired by the climate crisis, which won the 2022 Indiecade Climate Jam Grand Jury Prize and was featured in WNYC and NPR’s Science Friday. Most recently, he was a 1st AD and Associate Producer on Top Voices, USC’s 3-episode dramatic TV series. Jay has interned for Wayfarer Studios, Mandalay Pictures, and Team Downey. Yuwan is currently interning for Priority Pictures and has produced multiple short films, including Obligatory, a USC film school capstone project. Being an immigrant from a low-income background and a woman of color taught Yuwan the importance of representation. Her main objective as a filmmaker is to create personal, influential films that reflect her upbringing.
Ana Veiga (Producer): Ana Flavia Veiga is a fourth-year BFA in Film and Television Production at USC from Brazil. Driven by a dream to democratize access to making and watching movies, Ana’s on a mission to break barriers and bring compelling narratives to audiences worldwide. Most recently, she produced the capstone short film Heartless and associate-produced Siren Salon, which featured at NFFTY, Atlanta Shortsfest, and the Oscar and BAFTA-qualifying LA Shorts Fest. Aside from her narrative work, Amy leverages her political science background to focus on documentaries that explore socio-political issues, such as gentrification at Grand Central Market and social justice for Los Angeles' unhoused populations, using her films to amplify marginalized voices and drive meaningful change.

Britney Ngaw (Associate Producer): Britney Ngaw (pronounced Naw) is a New York-based producer, invested in supporting queer/AAPI productions through engagement with local businesses. Adam Bloodgood (Associate Producer): Adam Bloodgood is a producer/director and choreographer from Seattle, pursuing a B.F.A. in film and television production at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts.
