The Story

Three friends returning from a post-college road trip drive in a blissful haze until they stop for gas. The women have been friends through college, and just spent the past week bonding in the mountains of Ojai, California, relishing in one last getaway before they enter the real world. At the gas station they're confronted by two men. The women are nervous, creeped out, and frankly weren't expecting visitors. The situation goes from unsettling to worse when the men try to get the women to return to their campsite with them.
While these men are left with the feeling of confusion over a harmless exchange, the women take off feeling as those they've escaped a near death experience. This film will explore the power dynamic between the sexes, and the uncomfortable position women are put in when men don't consider their presence may make for something more frightening than they mean it to be.

Nebraska’s Calling is a short film grounded in genuine experience. Joanna’s script delves into the confusion of intentions, misunderstandings and the line between menace and mistake. In the words of Margaret Atwood, “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them.” This film invites the viewer, woman or man, to exam the dichotomy of intention, power, and perception.
I found myself particularly drawn to Nebraska’s Calling. It is a story about the resilience of female friendship painted against the dramatic backdrop of a lonely gas station in the California desert. There is so much feeling to be captured and explored. We aim to deliver a captivating narrative that leaves the viewer in a state of contemplation when the credits roll.
- Kathryn Ferentchak, Director

Joanna, Kat, and Grace graduated from Syracuse University in 2017. After they moved to Los Angeles, they teamed up to create female focused films. Nebraska's Calling is the second film they'll make as a production team.

Joanna Monfreda (Producer/Writer): Joanna has produced a myriad of films for friends over the past five years. She loves handling logistics and is passionate about cultivating comfortable and creative environments for filmmakers to manifest their true vision. The first film she produced, She Was Asked Her Age, directed by Tia Naayem, won Best Short Film in both the LA Short Awards and the New York City Indie Film Awards in 2016. Her second film, Tessellation, directed by Julian Garnik, was selected for into the Syracuse International Film Festival in 2018. After wrapping Grace Cannon's latest film,The Drive, she stepped out of her comfort zone to write her first short, Nebraska's Calling.
Kat Ferentchak (Director): Kathryn was raised in Colorado and will always carry the dynamic scenery of the Rocky Mountains with her. She began working on independent films at 16 and from there her passion led her to a film degree at Syracuse University and into an exciting Entertainment Industry career. Kathryn’s personal film work focuses on empowered personalities and seeks to discover the character within the landscape.

Grace Cannon (Director of Photography): Cannon is a visual storyteller, interested in capturing the compelling aspects of the human mind. Her first short she Directed, For My Lovers, was selected into the Santa Fe Film Festival in 2016. Her second short, Pretty Empty, is currently in the festival circle and has won two awards with two selections into festivals such as The Studio International Film Festival. Whether it be a love story or psychological drama, she explores the journey with her characters as they try to negotiate their way through the thicket of human relationships and emotional pitfalls of modern life. Cannon just recently wrapped on The Drive which will be released in 2018.
