This is how it ends. She is forgiven, or can finally start to imagine forgiveness. This is how it starts. She has always wanted a child. This is how it really begins. She has a son. His birth takes all the love out of her and now all that’s left is fear.

Mission Statement

We are all afraid of being, or becoming, unforgivable. Some days, it’s hard to imagine a way out of it. Others, it’s easier to believe in. This film exists in both kinds of days and asks – how are you feeling today? Do they deserve to be forgiven, or not? Do you? (Yes. I hope, yes).

The Story

There is always night, for half the world at a time.

There is always a woman, just as there is always wanting.

There is always a mother, just as there is always fear.

There is a child, and there is forgiveness. Not always, but sometimes.

Here they are. Be gentle with them.

There once was a boy who lived to play amongst the trees beyond his house. His name was Archie.

Archie is a simply boy with simple pleasures. He loves the forest, he loves its trees and its secrets. He loves his nanny, he loves his feather boas. He loves his mother but fears she doesn't love him.

There once was an old woman, Maggie, who had always wanted a child of her own but by the will of the gods, she never did.

Maggie is a gentle, patient woman, and she loves Archie as her own. She doesn't cause trouble, for fear she will lose access to him. But even she has a breaking point.

There once was a mother named Nora, whose love had long surrendered to fear.

Nora is not a good mother and everyone in the house knows it. She wants to protect Archie but all her attempts only alienate him. When her worst fears come true, she must face the consequences, or risk pushing Archie away forever.

Night Walking exists between boundaries. Day, night, waking, dreaming. The edge of one thing is the beginning of another and all three of our characters stand on the threshold.

One strong visual illustration of this is the presence of mosquito nets and gauzy curtains. It evokes a distinctly summer feel, something gentle and light fluttering in the breeze, and it makes visible the air moving between our family of three. At night time, these nets become ghostly and illuminated, and they emphasise the fluid boundary between safety and danger, house and forest.

Our night time lives in vibrant blues and reds, it is teeming and alive. Our daytime shots are green and yellow,

We are also heavily influenced by photographers such as Sally Mann and Tytia Habing. Both these photographers capture their children as they are, not who they wish they were.

The images of the film should be just as unflinching. Childhood and motherhood are both brutal processes of growing and, as filmmakers, we will face it head on.

Folks...it's now time to cover everyone's favourite part of filmmaking – budget.

Below you will find a pie chart and written breakdown of our allocations. Taking care of our cast and crew is of the utmost importance which is why we will not be skimping on food and lodging. A well-cared for crew means a well-cared for film. It always shows – trust us.

Our next biggest allocation is for location as we are looking for very specific architectural and geographic details. We're gunning for one picture location which needs to be a cabin/house/studio look which is surrounded by forest. Getting a forest location with the right structural elements in the house is the tricky part, which is why we've allocated more for location. The setting is just as much a character in the film as the three members of the family so getting the right location is tantamount.

Any pledges that put us past our budget goal will go towards post-production finishing for the film – money for editing, sound, and colour grading means that we get the film out to you as soon as possible!

Your pledge now will support us through the remainder of pre-production through to the end of shooting for Night Walking.

About This Team

Winona Lu – Writer/Director

Winona Lu is a director, cinematographer, and producer whose work is often fascinated with familial relations and how the fears that plague us inform how we move around each other. A recent question in her mind has been on the matter of forgiveness – of others but more importantly, of self. And thus, their thesis film, 'Night Walking.'

Winona’s perspectives as a filmmaker are absolutely rooted in her experience growing up in an immigrant household, with her guiding principle being that all people, all stories, deserve respect and the dignity of being heard. This has been further cemented by their study at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts for Film & TV as well as extensive experience as a director, DP, and producer in narrative and commercial productions. She is currently in post for her latest film, 'This Is All You Are,' a psychological drama that was made with the support of Panavision. She is excited to work with dear friends and collaborators to breathe life into 'Night Walking.'

Mir Lien – Producer

Mir Lien, a creative producer in her final year at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, is proud to collaborate again with Winona on their thesis film, 'Night Walking.' With a diverse skill set acquired through hands-on experiences across various filmmaking departments, Mir's heart lies in giving voice to cultural and familial narratives like this one.

Mir’s recent producing credits include 'ROPE,' 'What We Leave Behind,' ‘The Sound of Love,’ and Winona’s latest short film, 'This Is All You Are.' Committed to fostering inclusive and equitable spaces for diverse voices, she is dedicated to championing the talents, passions, and dreams of those within her creative sphere. As she looks forward to reuniting with a team of cherished collaborators, she feels deeply honored to be part of bringing their vision to life once again.

Phoebe J Yung – Producer

Phoebe J Yung is a recent graduate of NYU Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA in Film & Television and a minor in the Business of Entertainment, Media, and Technology.
