Mission Statement

Our mission is to lay the foundation of a universal human experience, specifically through a cultural perspective, honoring Mexican heritage and tradition to not only push the boundaries of this genre, but also to spark conversations within this community.

The Story

(Think Interstellar meets Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)

Olas is a Mexican science fiction drama that dares to imagine what stories from our community look like among the stars.

Told in Spanish and rooted in magical realism, Olas follows 18-year-old Javi on a surreal journey to the edge of the solar system. But this isn't just a space mission, it’s a reckoning with memory, grief, and the unspoken bond between a son and his father. As Javi ventures deeper into the unknown, he's pulled through fragmented memories and emotional turbulence, forced to confront what’s been left unsaid between them.

We begin the story in one of Javi’s core memories, a day at the beach with his father. It is this memory that propels us to the present, where we find Javi and his father Santiago in the cockpit of their spaceship, the Xolotl, preparing to launch towards a wormhole at the edge of the solar system.

They arrive at their destination, admiring the ethereal formation of the wormhole, but before they can continue their mission, they are bombarded by enemy ships, the unknown protectors of the Omeyocan. Amid the midst of a galactic dogfight, Javi is transported into his life’s memories, forced to reflect and navigate his past to finish the mission of reaching the wormhole.

At its core, Olas is a critique of masculinity within the context of Mexican culture. While the film explores many themes, this one stands at the center, it’s what transports Javi back into the memories of his life and compels him to confront the emotional turbulence in his relationship with his father. Although love is present between them, Javi cannot complete his mission without first understanding what’s truly at stake: finding closure with his father and embracing him fully.

Machismo runs deep in Latino and Hispanic cultures. It shapes family dynamics and often encourages men to suppress their emotions, to reject vulnerability. This generational stoicism can leave much love unspoken and unresolved. Through Olas, I want to explore the often-unseen tenderness between fathers and sons, and the emotional weight that builds when we fail to express what we feel. With this film, I hope to spark conversation within my community, a cautionary tale that reminds us: to live fully is to live vulnerably.

This story is essential for me to tell now for many reasons, one of which is to provide a platform for Hispanic/Latino representation within the Science Fiction and Fantasy genre, and another is to grapple with my anxieties and fears regarding the concept of death. The importance of providing representation across genres cannot be undermined. This goes beyond engagement and connection with specific audiences. My mission is to create a new norm in this underrepresented industry. Growing up, I longed to see a science fiction film where the characters looked like me and spoke like me. While Spanish-language sci-fi exists, it remains a niche and largely untapped space. Our community deserves to see itself reflected in these stories which are often overlooked. Latinos in Science Fiction is not only about elevating the genre, but also placing Latinidad in the future. We must remember that although our culture is deeply rooted, it also holds space within modernity, not only existing in the past and present, but paving the way forward.

This story is a perfect example of combining my love for Science Fiction and culture, synthesizing both in a way I’ve never seen before on the big screen. In addition to the cultural aspect of this film, this story is also a vessel for my own grief and fears. This story has allowed me to express my fears and create a reassuring tale of life after death, emphasizing the importance of telling people how much they mean to you before it’s too late.

For Olas, the team and I aim to design the suits/helmets for Javi and Santiago, hoping to create culturally authentic pieces that relate to each character personally. This means, creating subtle but powerful symbolism within the suits design, allowing them to provide a canvas for each characters collage of memories, while still appearing as a functioning, practical space suit.

The funds will aid in our ability to do this film justice and to create a culturally authentic and genre-pushing piece.

They will help secure:

  • Locations
  • Meals for our hard-working crew and cast
  • Authentic and culturally inspired Spacesuit/helmet
  • Studio Teachers for our child actor
  • Record an authentic and original score (Mariachi and Sci-Fi Fusion)
  • Visual Effects for the space sequences

We would be so grateful for your support in helping bring Olas to life. Whether it’s through a donation or simply sharing our campaign with others, every bit truly makes a difference. This story means the world to us, and we can’t do it without your help.

Be sure to follow us on Instagram @olas_film for behind-the-scenes updates, casting news, and more as we get closer to production.

We are also accepting in-kind contributions and sponsorships for catering, locations, etc. Please contact [email protected] if you are interested in supporting the project.

Our initial goal of $20,000 will help fund the production of Olas, covering essential costs like cast, crew, equipment, and basic locations. But filmmaking doesn’t stop when the cameras do!

If we’re fortunate enough to exceed our goal, our stretch goal is set at $35,000.

Every extra dollar will directly elevate the film and allow us to:

  • Enhance our post-production with professional color grading, sound mixing, and scoring to give Olas a true cinematic finish.
  • Bring our visual effects to life in a way that fully honors the poetic sci-fi world we’ve created.
  • Secure more accurate props, wardrobe, and set pieces to fully immerse viewers in Javi’s journey.
  • Access higher-quality locations that better reflect the scale and depth of our story.
  • Cover critical festival submission fees and deliverables to share Olas with audiences across the globe!

Your continued support will help us push the boundaries of independent filmmaking and tell a bold, visually stunning, and emotionally resonant Mexican sci-fi story. Let’s go beyond the stars, together.
