These girls experience loss and love as they grieve their friend who died young. It's facts of life told through the lens of three teenage girls - a group of people often misunderstood by the world. Teenage girls can be cruel, kind, funny, and everything else, and my girls are no exception.

Mission Statement

I want to tell this story as it's a film about three teenage girls existing where they are the only characters. Friendship between girls is often the most profound version of love I've ever experienced, and I want to express that in this film. This story is a love letter to the woman who helped me.

The Story

'Olivia' is a coming-of-age drama film that follows three teenage girls, Isabel, Miranda, and Sofi, that starts with them spreading their friend’s ashes over a bridge.

Following will be a short nostalgic journey as the three spend a day together, but Isabella struggles to accept what happened and open up to her friends about Olivia's death. In a group that always relied on four, this dynamic is new and scary for them, and the film follows the process of mourning and the importance of friendship during times of grief.

Our main character is Isabel. After losing one of her best friends, Olivia, Isabel struggles to come to terms with the loss and finds it difficult to open up. Her pain is compounded by the fact that she was the one who discovered Olivia after her death. Sofi is the unprompted ‘leader’ of this group. She’s intensely loyal and honest, and once her friend, she’ll treat you with the respect and kindness she thinks you deserve. Sofi struggles to understand why Isabel becomes so closed off, causing a clash in their friendship. Miranda is a sweet girl, but the kind of person who is maybe a bit of a pushover. She has an innocence to her that other people would want to protect, and she can get away with a lot with her friends. When Isabel and Sofi start clashing, she tries to intervene.

'Olivia' is a story inspired by the classic films of the 80's about growing up, facing the end of girlhood, and approaching grief as a young person. It's a story about friendship and loss and how these two concepts intertwine in the lives of three teenage girls.

Death and loss are present in everyone's lives, at so many different moments. It's a story everyone can relate to, and everyone was once a teenager. I am shooting with a crew mostly of WOC, as well as casting the same way. They are faces I don't see in the genera often, and I want to tell this story as a representation of my childhood, and the girls I grew up with. In a genera I love so much, I decided to make "Olivia" as a love letter to is, as well as the woman in my life.

Right now, we are in pre-production and working on casting! We are shooting in April and this campaign will help us make the best possible film we can by keeping our cast and crew fed, taken care of, as well as support the creative aspect of the film. A donation, no matter how small, helps us reach our goal. If unable to donate, you can also share this campaign and our film's Instagram (olivia_shortfilm_) to help spread the word!

About This Team

Aya, Meng Na, and Kelli are all friends and peers of Jillian, the writer and director of 'Olivia'. All three have produced for multiple projects during their time at NYU, and have worked with Jillian before on previous projects. They're all amazing creatives who have directed their own personal projects as well. All working as producers, Meng Na will also be the Assistant Director on set, and Aya will be Unit Production Manager. Jillian appreciates each and every one of them, and it has been exciting working with them so far on 'Olivia'!
