The Story

Olympic Pride, American Prejudice - Why am I making this movie?

An American, a Negro...two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder.

          W. E. B. DuBois

My mother taught school for over 4 decades.  She experienced great joy in watching young minds expand and learn new things.  For me, the documentary form is my classroom.  My textbook is read at 24 frames per second. I choose to tell the stories others don’t--the stories of uncredited, underrepresented or misrepresented voices that have changed our world.  I whole-heartedly accept responsibility and it is an honor to stand as a modern griot.

Set against the strained and turbulent atmosphere of a racially divided America, which was torn between boycotting Hitler’s Olympics or participating in the Third Reich’s grandest affair, Olympic Pride, American Prejudice follows 18 African American athletes before and after they sail to Germany to represent the U.S. at the Summer Olympic Games in Berlin. They represented a count
