Hello! I am Edward Brody Almon, and a senior in MSU Bozeman’s Film Program. This will be my final film in this program. I figured, go big or go home! As the writer and director of One Foot After Another, I wanted to create a story that didn’t give the audience all the answers. Akin to real loss and change, the film leaves pieces behind for viewers to decipher through the lens of their own experiences. I want this film to cultivate questions and discussions amongst the audience. 

Synopsis

The Wanderer meanders through a remote valley. He has no memory of who he is or where he’s headed. This changes after a couple takes him to a local doctor. Eventually, he is reconnected with his sister, Paris. As he uncovers his past through dreams and faded memories, the audience does the same alongside him.

Will he choose to remember the pain, or continue to forget?

Inspirations

Paris, Texas (1984) is the largest inspiration for this film. Particularly, it’s amnesia-stricken main character and emphasis on natural lighting. I wanted to bring something fresh to the equation; my other inspirations were Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003) and Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004). I wanted this film to have some of the grittiness, shocking violence, and mixed media approach. We aim to make something original through the combination of these two films. While drawing elements from each, we will differentiate ourselves with our animation style, use of multiple formats, and a different story arc by tying in my own experience with change and loss. 

Four Mediums? 

This isn’t a film to be consumed, but experienced. For my final semester, I aim to push the envelope with this film. Particularly with the use of different media to reflect one's state of memory. I want to put all of our crew’s efforts on full display through their chosen formats. Many talented individuals will be pouring hours into this project. I want you to feel the pencil stroke of the animator and the gate weave of the film. Why four mediums? Because I want Sebastian’s world to feel tangible, and beyond that, I want you to feel the presence of each artist. 

Who is this movie for?

This film is for an active audience, for people who like puzzles. It’s for people excited about physical film and animation. This is a film for people who want to engage with stories, not just consume them. It’s also a film for people processing loss, guilt, and change. This project will ask you to apply your own experiences to the film.
