Ever run into someone you REALLY didn't want to see? Ever looked at an OVERPRICED apartment with a comically disinterested broker? Open House is the story of two estranged half-sisters who coincidentally end up at the same NYC apartment showing and are forced to confront their complex past.

Mission Statement

Apartment hunting in NYC sucks and we think we should talk about it. Open House is rooted in the experiences of renters like us. We are committed to hiring local cast and crew as well as the entire principal cast of Open House being played by women and/or non-binary actors.

The Story

After screening our first short film at film festivals and to live audiences, the creative team at Day Off Productions are so excited to start pre-production on our next short film! Open House.

Open House is the story of two estranged half-sisters, Dallas and Kayla, who coincidentally end up at the same NYC apartment open house. Both sisters want the apartment but, of course, neither can afford it.

This project was born from a simple ethos: how can we utilize spaces already available to us to tell the best possible story we can? Well, as New York based filmmakers and residents, we know how common it is to end up at a wacky overpriced open house. We also know that even in a city with over eight million people, you can still run into that one person you really really don’t want to see.

For this project, we want to work with local NYC based creative talent, both behind and in front of the camera in order to tell this uniquely New York story. It's important to us to tell a story by renters, about renters and the crazy things we all go through!

Current Project Status

We are so excited that for this project we already have our primary location secured, a completed shooting script, a DP attached and multiple cast members have signed on for the project! What is left to secure is our funding so we can pay for the following items.

  • Pay for our cast and crew
  • Craft services and meals for our shoot days (plenty of coffee!)
  • Gear and Equipment Rentals
  • Production Insurance
  • Post-Production Costs
  • Location fees

Our plan is to film for two days in the in the late-summer/early fall, once we are done filming we will begin work on post-production and are planning on wrapping post-production before the end of the year! Once we are done with post-production then we will submit the short to film festivals to hopefully screen at festivals in 2026!

Previous Work

Our first short film, Canker Sore (pictured above, 2024) was an amazing experience for us. That short is currently in its festival run and we've taken all of our experiences that we've learned from our first short and are excited to apply them to Open House.

During his time at Lobo, he’s worked on high-profile campaigns for major brands including UPS (featuring Coco Gauff), Frito-Lay, Chobani, Espolon, and Mrs. Meyers. Prior to Lobo, Otto gained experience at Broadway Video, as well as various production companies in London and Belfast. Most recently, he co-produced Canker Sore, the debut short film from Day Off Productions. He graduated from Franklin & Marshall College with a degree in Business and Film.

Emily Kordovich (Director of Photography) is a director of photography based in Brooklyn, NY.  Many of the projects Emily has lensed are women’s stories, queer stories, immigrant stories, and stories with heart, humanity, and intention. Emily considers themselves an emotional translator of each project, merging the technical and creative to bring stories authentically to life. Their goal is to craft images that make people feel something, all while making the day, and having a great time doing it. Emily was accepted into the ASC Vision Mentorship Program in 2023, and received the 2024 Fresh Perspectives in Cinematography Grant presented by AbelCine, Arri, and The ASC for the short film, Remnants Of Nova.

Emily recently completed principal photography on their first feature film, Ice Cream (dir. Liza Renzulli), and has otherwise been the DoP for 23 short films and counting. Their true passion lies in narrative filmmaking, but they have worked on commercial and branded content projects with clients such as OneSkin, MAC Cosmetics, Architectural Digest, Google, La Mer, Victoria’s Secret, The Zoe Report, Food & Wine, NYLON, Punch, Vox Media, Metropolis Report, NOTION, Bustle, Martha Stewart Living, and more. Emily grew up a first-generation Macedonian immigrant in a small town outside Rochester, NY (which means they are also a born and raised Buffalo Bills fan. Go Bills.) Now based in Brooklyn, they live with their partner Spencer, and their two cats, Appa and Naro.
