Mission Statement
The OSTSG show-runners are a dynamic wife duo and as a series that began as a teen filmmaking program, our goal is to empower young women to become front-runners in the entertainment industry- including our 16-year-old assistant director. Our team also proudly consists of a female & LGBTQ+ majority.About The Project
Growing up, I was a dweller in the world of make-believe. Long after it was deemed child's play, I was known for living in my imagination. RPGs, writing, acting, TV & movies were my most important outlets for this and at the top of the pyramid was horror movies. Thanks to my mother’s own love for them, I was able to soak up the stories with her. We spent late nights on our couch, eating popcorn and putting ourselves in the shoes of Clarice Starling and Laurie Strode- attempting to decode the endings before they happened. They are memories I cherish. As a young actress, I longed for the future when I would be old enough to play roles like Nancy or Laurie. As weird as it may sound, some of my fondest memories revolve around horror films and I always knew one day, I would somehow pay homage to them.
As everyone does, I eventually grew up and lucky for me, the concept of ‘Outtakes’ came along. Starting as an outreach project to teach teen filmmaking, we slowly but surely grew into the well-known, award-winning series Or So the Story Goes. Four years after its start, the pre-teens we had been teaching were full-fledged teenagers and we were ready to tackle something that is rarely done- a teen slasher with actual teen actors, made for a PG13 audience- Golden Rule. A gateway for younger people to dip their toes into the world of horror in an environment that was appropriate for them. It wasn't easy. It was a summer of extreme heat, long days and endless work- but the end result was a project that I will always hold close to my heart... also a lot of new teen slang words that I had no idea were even a thing.
After Golden Rule’s success, we are ready to create our newest season, perhaps the most horrifying concept yet- a home invasion horror. My hope is that our series continues to light a spark of interest and love for the horror genre in a new generation- a new generation to bring forward those things that go bump in the night...
Or So the Story Goes began as a teen outreach program to teach filmmaking. The program’s summer project was a short retelling of Little Red Riding Hood as a modern day horror titled, Little Rosemary. This was filmed with no budget with creativity and passion- using a painter’s pole as a boom pole and a household camera to film on.
It was quickly discovered that these kids had a passion that could not be stopped. What was once an after school hobby, quickly became a full-fledged web series with the first self produced season, Happy Thoughts- a paranormal retelling of Peter Pan. Following the season’s success, Outtake Productions continued to film its next season, Sweet Truth- a found footage twist on Hansel and Gretel. The most recent season, Golden Rule is the first season fully produced with a professional crew and is a teen slasher spin on Rumplestiltskin. However, it still uses teens (including many from the after school program) in the cast & crew.
This season we focus on retelling the classic, Jack and the Beanstalk in a modern, home invasion setting.
After the death of his father, Jack Jacobs goes to extremes to help his family find the money to keep their home. He quickly finds his burglaries come with a price when those he stole from show up unexpectedly to take back what was taken from them. The Jacobs family must then fight to survive the intruders’ evil games of revenge.
It's a fact that the OSTSG team can make magic when it comes to doing a lot for a little. We produced the first few seasons with a limited amount of equipment and self-taught skills. What we created goes far beyond those limitations. For our most recent production, Golden Rule, we were able to increase the budget and bring a professional crew on board, including our new Director of Photography, Trevor Peckham. With our combined skills, Golden Rule became our most successful season to date, continuing to do well on the festival circuit and airing on Apple TV & Roku via the streaming platform SeekaTV.
The upcoming season, Knock Knock will utilize the same team and more. The money raised will go to fund the crew, cast, equipment, production insurance, craft services, props, wardrobe, travel expenses to get the cast & crew to our filming locations and much more. Production is slated for late summer 2018 with an early 2019 premiere.
Thankfully, due to the generosity of sponsors, we have already been able to raise some of our budget goals. However, we are now looking to you to help us reach the end goal and make the season a reality.
Since its origin, the series has traveled across the country (and internationally) for comic cons and festivals- winning numerous awards along the way. Sweet Truth won Best Horror at Vancouver Web Fest in 2017. OSTSG has also been nominated for seven Indie Series Awards, bringing home the win for Best Original Song (by Composer & Music Supervisor, Judith Avers) in 2016, nominated again in 2017 for two awards and in 2018 for three- including a win for Best Soundtrack. Golden Rule also won Best Horror at Minnesota Web Fest 2017, Best Teen Series at Baltimore Web Fest 2017 and Best Web Series at Independent Horror Movie Awards. It was nominated for Best Actress (Rainni Moran) at New Zealand Web Fest 2017. A full list of awards can be seen on our website!
Horror is simple. Horror needs to grab a hold of you, it needs to make you think twice about turning off the light before bed ... and it always needs to be one step ahead of you. We want to bring that to the new generation in a fun, ratings safe way!
