Mission Statement

The goal of OOMS is to show the hidden and unspoken reality of eating disorders - specifically bulimia. It aims to challenge the misconceptions around the disease, demonstrate it's similarities to any addiction and depict the role it plays as coping mechanism.

The Story

TW: Depictions of depression, binge eating and bulimia.

When Renata, a young woman living in Los Angeles, receives a shocking and unexpected email from her ex-husband, Scott, she does what she does best – run away. Overwhelmed by the news she embarks on a solo trip into the Malibu mountains to center herself and process her emotions. As she drives the voice of a man and woman keep playing in her head -- clearly a haunting memory.

Renata arrives at a beautiful home in the wilderness. On the counter she sees a basket of snacks the hosts warmly left for her. She reads all the calories and pushes them away - the first sign. After taking in the space and the nature that surrounds them, Renata sits to craft a response. The voices are back in her head. Frustrated she stands to grab a snack from the basket — the voices play in her head. Growing increasingly anxious, Renata opens every snack, dumps it in the trash and covers them in dish soap. She sits down to write a response… the voices are back. Renata becomes so overwhelmed and overtaken with agony she leaves abruptly. We see what she has been looking at, her computer shows a video she’s been staring at — the source of the voices.

Renata bursts back into the cabin with arms full of groceries. In a haste she kicks off her pants and frantically begins to binge. She opens a bottle of vodka and guzzles it. She slams a pan on the stove and melts cheese on it. She smears it on bread and devours it. She pops open a bottle of milk and pours a glass. She dips cookies. The microwave dings and she pulls out a hot cup of ramen noodles she hurriedly shovels into her mouth. There is a store-bought cake on the counter, she violently eats it with her bare hands.

The sensory overload of the binge takes her into a euphoric, dream state. The place somewhere in the fifth dimension where her and Scott are still together. Where they have been dancing in loving agony for the last 10 years. It looks like they are about to kiss when Renata is flung back into the cabin. She runs to the bathroom and purges it all violently.

The next morning Renata the disaster she created. Her eyes are red and broken capillaries surround her eyes. She takes in the kitchen, there is food everywhere... the stove was left on. She is stunned by how far she was transported in her pain. It had been years since the last time she binged and purged.

She walks to the ocean to reflect. Renata and Scott had an intense and deep love, they married young (imagine Noah and Allie from The Notebook). As she stares into the horizon memories begin to flood in: the day she met Scott, how he completely stole her heart, their first fight, their joy, their wedding, their violent fights. She begins to take off her clothes and runs into the ocean frantic until she surrenders and let's out guttural scream as if to release it all once and for all.

Back at the cabin she begins to clean up the mess and pick up the pieces. As she does, we hear the final letter she wrote in response to Scott. She close the emotional note with: Please don’t respond. I just had to get it out of my system.

TONE & APPROACH

Our approach is lead by camera movements, lighting and editing. In the moments of melancholy and nostalgia we'll move slow and steady -- for example we see Renata driving through the canyon and staring longingly at the ocean. The moments of mania will be identified by close ups and quick cuts -- for example we see a vodka bottle opened hastily - close up on the top spinning off, a pan slam down on the stove — close up on the flames, the microwave ding — CU of the clock, etc. The dream state will represent a very moody, intimate and vulnerable place in which Renata still feels her connection to Scott — a dark space with a single source of colored light to create silhouettes and give it the sense that it’s an alternate reality.
