The Story

In 2026, three roommates drop everything and drop out of society. Azalea, Cassia, and Ivy pack their bags and hop in a taxi to “somewhere beautiful.” The three girls find freedom in a California field, doing yoga, repeating affirmations, and writing poems. When Cassia spots a coyote while out foraging for mushrooms, she realizes that being outside is no longer for her. When she communicates her desire to go home with her friends. Azalea turns on her, threatening Cassia for ruining their chance at freedom. The coyote returns, attacking Cassia, and Azalea is forced to decide to let Cassia suffer or save her friend. Azalea saves Cassia from the coyote attack. The coyote is sacrificed, bonding the girls closer as they journey home.

The desire to escape is a familiar feeling in a country becoming ultra-digitized and hyperpolarized. When my characters leave their apartment for the great Californian outdoors, it is an experiment in the freedom a lot of us desire, but never act on. This call to escape is one that I think Gen Z in particular can relate to. A generation that, in some ways, has been denied a proper entrance into society, due to economic instability, COVID, and a complete dependence on social media.

For my characters, escape means freedom from the confines of society, no more taxes, ex-boyfriends, or doing dishes. For these three young women, freedom looks like yoga in a meadow, vaping in a meadow, and repeating affirmations in a meadow. Outside satirizes the fantasy of freedom my generation loves to Pinterest about (eating fruit in nature) and turns that fantasy on its head.

TONE & STYLE
Outside is a comedy short of approximately 10 minutes. It speaks to Gen Z’s unique humor and desire to rebel, satirizing the aesthetics and fantasy of freedom. It’s as if all the girls in a Sofia Coppola perfume commercial turned on each other. I also wanted to channel early 90's comedies, which featured a range of nuanced and FUNNY Black women characters. Think if the "Girlfriends" of "Living Single" walked right out of their sitcom living rooms, right into the great outdoors. Outside takes touching grass literally. The film ends on a more sincere note, touching on how we can find the freedom and protection we desire in our friendships
