The Story
Update: 10/23:
We are officially greenlit! Thanks to all of our supporters, social media sharers, and friends in general who've helped push this project over the line. Now we're not done yet- we're pushing for our stretch goals of working with a colorist, a cinematographer for a live action scene, a publicist for the launch, and travel to the premiere. We'll keep pushing to the end of the campaign. Thankyou friends for your support!
Pain into Art
I’ve got an internal voice and he's a jerk. He reminds me I’ve got multiple sclerosis everyday.
I had to google MS when I was diagnosed, it's a complicated condition. It's when your immune system attacks your nerve coverings. It’s degenerative. There's no cure. And I’m angry at the disease, you know, because it's helpful to have something to blame. But the disease is my own system, the same powerful system that fought off every childhood cold and flu, it's a part of me.
So what is Palazzo? It’s a short film about a man’s relationship with the disease, personified by a domineering New Yorker. Our protagonist must speak a language the disease doesn’t understand so he can grow new neural pathways and gain independence. So he learns Italian.

An Experimental Documentary
You might be wondering... what kind of film are we talking about here? Yes there are scripted elements, like the voice of the disease portrayed by the great New York artist Glenn Goldberg. But we're also leaving space for improvisation. We're using paper puppets, paint on glass and other multimedia techniques inspired by the great Lotte Reiniger and experimental filmmakers of the 20th century. We're building something physical, made out of paper and layered with sounds vibrating through the air. We will build the sonic identity from sourced audio in New York and Florence, Italy, using a mix of foley and synthesis.
My collaborator, Morgan Bosc, and I finished Noggin last year, the spiritual precursor to Palazzo, which played dozens of festivals like Slamdance, Salute Your Shorts, London International Animation Festival, Animage in Brazil, and more, where it picked up 7 awards. It was written up in sources like Curbcuts and Psyche, and the project went on tour across the UK with Animate Open.
We’re ready to build a new film with a more complex visual identity, instrumentation and acting. We will construct a wide glass multi-plane for shooting large scale puppets. Everything you will hear in the film will be sampled from field recordings, both ambient and vocal. We will work with singers, musicians, and even a small choir to punctuate the sonic texture of the film. The project features additional music by the mega-talent Asher Kurtz, who's dreamy guitar work will shape the tone of the film.
Morgan and I work well together. We live 10 minutes by foot. Noggin opened up new ideas we’re ready to implement with Palazzo. We know each other’s working routines and habits, and we’re excited to push contrasts in rhythm and texture.

About This Team
Case Jernigan makes happy sad stop-motion films. Case grew up in Charleston, SC, where people tell stories to reveal things about themselves. He makes work about vulnerability, artistic integrity, embarrassment, sickness and healing. He lives with multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease that affects his brain and spine. His projects reclaim pieces of his lost self by building memory palaces and preserving pieces of knowledge. It’s not easy, but he feels lucky.
Case has shown short films and won awards in dozens of film festivals, like Slamdance, HotDocs, Sweaty Eyeballs and Salute Your Shorts. His films have been Vimeo Staff Picks on 5 occasions. He’s a Screen Australia grant recipient and was a finalist for the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards in 2025.
Case has participated in many artist residencies, notably through the Sharpe-Walentas Program, The Center for Book Arts, and the Saltonstall Foundation. He studied painting at William & Mary and the New York Studio School, and printmaking at Il Bisonte, Firenze.
Morgan Bosc is a composer, artist, sound engineer and founder. After co-founding the studios at The Rattle in London and Cats On Keyboards Studios in Amsterdam, Morgan works from their newly setup Creative Production studio: Sound Niccolò. Named after the historic San Niccolò neighbourhood in the heart of Florence. He’s worked with artists worldwide, Bloc Party, Imogen Heap, ZAND to sound designing for Adidas and NIKE to Nova Lectio. Passionate about sound and audio in all its aspects, Morgan is exploring how sound can connect with communities in Florence.
