Mission Statement

Pancake Skank is a story about what happens when another person recognizes the person you have the potential to be. It explores themes of friendship, self-discovery, and what it means to love someone as they are through a fantastical, surrealist lens.

The Story

In the eerie, neon-soaked expanse of The World of Almost Always Nighttime, folklore and reality blur in the shadow of a pancake-thieving outlaw known only as Pancake Skank. When a lonely, unremarkable young man, Lover Boi, crosses paths with the titular urban legend, he finds himself captivated by her magnetism. What begins as a flapjack stickup soon evolves into an unlikely partnership that reshapes them both - for good.

This is a story about what it means to be a friend in a lonely world - told by a group of real-life friends!

Pancake Skank is a short film that's surreal, fantastical, and deeply funny.

In terms of comps, the film is a blend of Sorry to Bother You and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, set in a world reminiscent of Streets of Fire, with a touch of the Mad Max "urban legends told around the campfire" vibe.

Did we mention we have some remarkable filmmakers on board as our Executive Producers?

First up, we have Lilly Wachowski, visionary writer/director of acclaimed kick-ass films like Bound, The Matrix, and Speed Racer! Her company, Anarchists United, including partners Sarah Marie Flores and Lawrence Mattis (Work in Progress, Mr. Right), is on board to help make this film a reality.

If that wasn't rad enough, we also have the amazing team behind Duplass Brothers Productions supporting this film: Mark Duplass, Mel Eslyn, and Jay Duplass. You know their work from countless brilliant films and TV shows, like Somebody Somewhere, Room 104, Togetherness, The Puffy Chair, Tangerine, and the HBO animated series Animals.

Hi, this is Sav Rodgers, writer/director of Pancake Skank. What a title. Back in 2018, I wrote "Pancake Skank" after I thought my beloved wife, Riley, had called me that. To be fair, it's an apt description.

It was so funny that I kicked around the idea for a few months, wrote this short, and then started work on my debut feature film Chasing Chasing Amy while I continued to hone my skills as a filmmaker. After seven years of work on Amy, I knew I wanted to return to my roots as a scripted filmmaker and to tell a story that was decidedly less personal.

We want to tell a wild, fun story with our friends that, honestly, rules. This film is pure fun at a time when we desperately need some respite, especially as queer people. There are no fascists allowed in the world of Pancake Skank. That's where you come in: join the team and help us make this. We know we have something special that can make you laugh.
