The Story
WHAT'S THE STORY?
A stolen script sets off a chain of chaos and betrayal, entangling a disgraced screenwriter, a feuding sister and brother, and a cowboy with dreams of becoming a Hollywood scribe. As their three interconnected stories unfold, ambition and greed collide in a comedic exploration of the messy power of storytelling.

WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE?
Being a filmmaker is extremely difficult. Add to that having a full-time job and a family and it's nearly impossible. From 2016 to 2020 I made 7 short films, not to mention all of the music videos I made both before and during that time. It's never an easy mountain to climb and making films is something you have to absolutely love in order to do it.
As the pandemic came to a close it became clear it was time to make a feature film. I wasn't getting any younger and the circumstances were never going to be perfect. With my father's help, we wrote the script for Paper Crowns in a way that I felt I could tackle; three independent stories that all connect to tell a larger story. I felt that filming each separately would allow me to get the time off from work, raise the money and get my hands around what is ultimately a HUGE task.
We began casting and filming in 2021, shooting over a few long weekends before spending nearly a year finalizing post-production. In 2023, we filmed part two, revisiting the first story to enhance it—recutting scenes, redoing color correction and sound, recording new music, and refining every detail along the way.
Now we're ready to start shooting the third story in our trilogy of greed and punishment, and we need your help!
THE FILMMAKERS
THE MATTINGLY BOYS
Paper Crowns is the brainchild of filmmaker Ian Mattingly, in collaboration with producer Jamie Ohlsen and Ohlsen Productions. Ian has previously directed seven short films and numerous music videos, but this is his debut feature film. Together with Jamie and the talented team, we’re excited to bring this darkly comedic vision to life.
Co-written with Ian's father D.W. Mattingly, and starring his brother Doug, it's easy to see why their production company is called The Mattingly Boys. With the bulk of their short films the Mattingly Boys have handled everything from pre-production through post-production and the films have starred family members including Ian's sons, Doug's wife, and their father D.W. When it came to taking on making a feature though, they have partnered with Ohlsen Productions to help.
OHLSEN PRODUCTIONS
Ohlsen Productions is run by producer Jamie Ohlsen.
Jamie Ohlsen was born and raised in Los Angeles. In the 7 years she’s been producing, Jamie’s earned 24 producer credits from features, shorts, TV movie pilots, and commercials. She has been mentioned in multiple articles for her success in the industry. Her producer credits include The Hard Hit, starring Richard T. Jones, which was released in October 2023 by Vertical Entertainment, and Wrong For Right, starring Omar Gooding and Eric Roberts, which is slated for release in 2025.
