Mission Statement

Paper Roses explores the often-ignored topic of queer relationships in film. Our mission is to highlight a queer story that celebrates the differences inherent in all of us. It's about being comfortable in your own skin and moving on from the past.

The Story

SYNOPSIS

Two binary opposites, Bianca, a southern woman socialized into only dating men, and Noah, a queer woman avoiding commitment after a breakup, find themselves on a date with each other without realizing their actual blind dates are running late. Their shared evening starts as a surprise but quickly becomes a welcome one as they realize they share more in common than they thought. All is going well as the two converse about their lives until suddenly, buzz buzz. Bianca's phone vibrates. It's from the other Noah, the man she was supposed to go on the actual blind date with. He is almost at the bar, and Bianca must decide what to do: Stick up her actual date or do the polite thing and leave with him.

INFLUENCES

Taking inspiration from movies like La La Land (2016), My Dinner with Andre (1981), and 500 Days of Summer (2009), "Paper Roses" aims to capture the excitement of new connections and the yearning one might experience all within the humorous context of a blind date gone wrong!

OUR TEAM

This film is being produced by a team of students from Portland State University (PSU) in an advanced ten-week film production class. As most of us approach graduation, this project serves as a culmination of our time and the skills we have developed here at PSU. For us, this project is the capstone of our college journey and, with your support, a film we can put on our reels to showcase our filmmaking abilities to future employers. By supporting this fundraiser, you are directly aiding independent cinema and student filmmakers.

TIMELINE

"Paper Roses" is currently in pre-production. We have a completed draft of the script and are actively working on pre-production materials, including lookbooks, shot lists, casting calls, location scouting forms, and more! Upon completion of pre-production, we will enter the production phase, which will primarily take place in the first week of February. Following the first week of February, we will transition to the post-production phase and expect to have the final cut of the film completed by March 19, 2026. Once completed, the film will be submitted to festivals!

HOW?

We are fundraising for things like location rent fees, production and costume design, transportation expenses, food services, and festival submissions. If we achieve our goal, further funds will go towards paying for production, more festival submissions, and other post-production related expenses.

About This Team

🌹Sapphire Maguigad🌹

Hello! My name is Sapphire Maguigad and I’ll be the producer for our film "Paper Roses!" I’m a senior at Portland State University and I’ll be graduating this spring. I’m originally from Seattle, but I’ve been enjoying my new home in Portland (I couldn’t escape the rain haha). My favorite thing about being on set is when you know you just got the perfect take of a scene. The energy from the crew is infectious and I’m excited to experience that once again for this film!

🌹Jordan Thompson🌹

Hi, I'm Jordan Thompson! I'm the Director for "Paper Roses!" I'm a filmmaker in my final year at Portland State University. Although I was born in Colorado, I've spent most of my life in Oregon and I love it here! I've always enjoyed telling stories and entertaining people through various mediums, but I found film to be my favorite storytelling medium. It's such a blast to be on set, collaborating with others, making jokes, and just having a fun (and sometimes stressful) time! I can't wait to show y'all this film!

🌹Catherine Olivares🌹

Hey guys! My name is Catherine Olivares, and I'm a junior. I will be the Assistant Director for the film we are making together, which I'm very excited about! I've been from Oregon my whole life and moved to Portland about 3 years ago. I enjoy being on set and helping out wherever needed, as well as taking care of everyone's safety. I also very much enjoy the post-production side, having specialties in editing and coloring.

🌹Anthony Gordan🌹

Hello there, my name is Anthony Gordon. I am the Director of Photography for "Paper Roses." I am finishing my Bachelor's in Film at Portland State University this June. Born and raised in Roseburg, Oregon, I moved to Portland to finish my education and further pursue filmmaking. I love production the most, always wanting to be involved with the camera in any way I can. Outside of film, I have a strong passion for photography, and I love building and making things.

🌹Emma Ridle🌹

Hello! My name is Emma Ridle, and I'm currently a senior at PSU graduating in the spring with a degree in film! I'm an aspiring writer so I'm very pleased to say I will be screenwriting for "Paper Roses" :) I'm from Alaska which had drove me a bit stir crazy and resulted in me moving to Portland! I knew I had wanted to work in the arts for as long as I can remember and have always been a pop culture nerd, so film really was my true calling. I love being on set and feeling the energy and passion from the crew who all want to make something we're proud of. I'm incredibly excited to work with this crew and make a film.

🌹Micah Beach🌹

My name is Micah Beach, and I am in my last year as a senior. I am the gaffer/assistant editor. I grew up in the small town of Brownsville, Oregon (fun fact, that’s where the movie Stand By Me was filmed), and have only been living in Portland for just over 2 years. Being on set is both stressful and exciting, especially when you know you nailed the perfect take. But more importantly, it’s exciting to see yourself and your team grow as you continue to increase your skills and develop yourself as filmmakers.

🌹Joseph Traver🌹

I'm Joe, the resident 1st AC for "Paper Roses." Full time artist and part time whatever else. I was born in Springfield, Oregon. I've done a bit of everything in relation to art, from drawing to sound. Directing brings me to life. I'm graduating this spring.

🌹Ian Russell🌹

Hello. My name is Ian Russell. I am the Editor for "Paper Roses." I'll be graduating from Portland State University this spring. I've lived in Oregon my whole life and filmmaking is my passion. I hope to work as a director in the future since I love that particular process the most. Most of the time I work as an editor. Can’t wait to help put the film together.

🌹Niki Villarimo🌹

Hi, my name is Niki Villiarimo and I'm the Production Designer & Prop maker for "Paper Roses." Originally from Hawaii but I've lived all over with a background in acting, singing, and performing-- I've now returned to complete my eduction at PSU to focus on the craft of Filmmaking. Outside of school, I'm an artist who sings and likes to dance for fun. I'm excited to be a part of this project as I really enjoy diving into the creative aspects of set design and prop building (imagine food styling-- did you think that milk in that cereal was real milk? Ha! Surprise its Elmers glue!).

🌹Hannah Douglas🌹

My name is Hannah Douglas and I'm currently a senior. I will be the costume designer for our film, but I'm always happy to help with anything else. I grew up in Portland, so I know the area well, and I have a car and space to keep items if we need. I enjoy the pre and post production filmmaking the most, but am also excited to get experience with actual production! Excited to be here!
