The Story
Penny in Sky is a short film about two strangers who meet on a cliffside on what they both believe to be their last day on Earth. Neither August nor Rose expected an audience, so when they meet, it becomes a conversation about the value of life, resilience, and how we aren't quite alone in our darkest moments.

"This story was born from a personal place that I later realized was a universal feeling. There was a time in my life when I felt like I was circling the drain. High-functioning, but extremely depressed. And though, at the time, I knew I wouldn't take my own life, the idea of it and what it would really mean in the grand scheme of things became a persistent thought. And I never said a peep to anybody. I didn't want to worry anybody and I didn't want anybody to feel responsible for the burden of bringing me back from that ledge.
But during this time of silence and dark thoughts, a friend started to confide in me their own ideations and depression. They started to come over all the time and I became their space to vent, to feel like they had someone they could talk to. Multiple times a week, they'd be over here, essentially afraid of what they'd do if left with their own thoughts in their own space too long.
And for some odd reason, this comforted me. To know that I could be a safe space for someone. That I could provide comfort and warmth, even if just a little. I'd let them talk for hours about everything that was wrong in their world and I got to pretend that nothing was wrong in mine. And by the end of it, we'd find something small and insignificant to laugh about.
And the whole time, they didn't have a clue that I was also thinking of death. And to this day, they still don't know that they just might have saved me. By not letting me be alone either.
I started writing this in April of 2022. I wasn't able to finish it until April of 2023, very shortly after my grandma passed. And it took another year of grieving and pulling myself out of that dark place to be able to share it with you all. For all too many of us who have been to that place, I hope it touches a part of your soul that you might not yet have the words for. I hope this speaks to you."
-- Drew
"I read the script to 'Penny In The Sky' on a plane with tears in my eyes. I felt so seen. When the opportunity to co-direct came about, there was no hesitation—it was my chance to extend that feeling to others.
Movies captivate me with their ability to transport us to realms beyond our own. They can shift our perceptions, awaken our senses, and touch our deepest feelings. My hope for this film is to reach into the hearts of those standing on their own cliffs of loneliness, offering a momentary bridge to a world where they too feel seen and cared for."

$5,600
We are hoping to raise, bare-minimum, $5,600 with this campaign. Our production team has completed two shoot days and now we have one more left that will include our ambitious underwater sequences. For this shoot day to happen, we need funds to pay our small but mighty crew, and add a SAG stunt coordinator to our team to ensure the safety of our actors. This amount also covers other production needs such as crafty, underwater camera housing, location expenses, etc.
However, we're hoping to surpass this amount and secure another $3000 (for a grand total of around $8500) to put towards post-production. They say a film is made three times -- in the script, in the shoot, and in the edit. This additional $4000 would ensure that our vision has remained true and of quality throughout all three stages. A large part of making this film move the audience the way that we hope is through the use of strong editing, color grading, sound design, and music.
