The Story

CUMBIA. DANCE. MUSIC.
It's what brings us together.
From the Director, Sofia Alejandro:
"In this film, Raul, an independent high school cumbia dancer, encounters Junior, a shy foster tween, spying on him and his dance group. Through friendship, dance, music, and brotherhood, Raul is able to provide a safe space for Junior after discovering his difficult home life. Although Raul takes Junior under his wing, we wanted to explore the aspect of his caring despite the instability in his own life."
The Story:
In a small border town, 12 year-old Junior is a shy, yet independent foster tween who spends his evenings going anywhere else but home. One night, he stumbles upon a group of high school cumbia dancers whose music and energy draws him in. As Junior begins to connect with this group, he forms some unlikely friendships. However, in order for him to officially join the group, he must perform a cumbia dance.

Due to the limited production timeline of the undergraduate thesis class, we only have 30 days to plan our production. This includes script workshopping, casting, fundraising, and overall planning.
Because of this, we are working hard with the support of our friends, colleagues, family, and our crowdfunding audience to fundraise our film.
Pre-Production: January to February 24th.
- Casting
- Fundraising
- Crewing
- Scheduling
- More logistics.
Production: February 24th - March 2nd.
- Equipment pick-ups.
- Preparation Day
- Pack-up day
Filming Dates: February 26th to March 1st.
Post-Production: March to April.
- Sound Design
- Editing Passes
- Necessary Pick-ups
As you can see, we have a bit more time allotted for our post-production. This will help us in carefully editing our film, schedule necessary pick-ups, and perfect our sound design.

"I believe love translates the most beautifully and strongly when it transcends through music and dancing. This film not only explores the love of cumbia, but expressing vulnerability in times of intense conflict... and learning to be okay with it."
- From the Director.
We want to make this film because we believe in the power that dance has in oneself and how it serves not only as recreation, but also as an escape from reality.

Currently, our team has been working hard to produce this film. Our top priority right now is our filming dates, which are coming up fast!
Where we are:
- Locked Script.
- Department heads Locked.
- Casting in progress.
- Location scouting in progress.
- Fundraising.
Principal photography begins late February 2026. With our strong team, we plan to work hard to fundraise outside of this campaign to make sure we have the necessary funds for our project.

With our estimated budget of $4,500, we can cover costs such as location, equipment, art department, and meals for our crew!
Let's break it down:
Meals & Crafty ($1,300): We wouldn't be able to make this film without our lovely crew. We want to make sure we keep our crew fed by providing two meals and craft services each set day!
Locations ($750): We will be filming in multiple locations, which all require the funding to rent out for multiple days. With this, we'll be able to secure our locations!
Art Department ($750): Creating the wonderful universe of Los Huachinangos would not be possible without our wonderful art department, which heavily requires funds to recreate the artistic world.
Equipment & Transportation ($900): Although the school will be lending us equipment, we will still need to rent more from local movie film rentals, such as Short Hand Camera, etc. We are also filming in multiple locations a drive away from the UT campus, so we are planning to reimburse all of our drivers for gas and other expenses.
Contingency ($400): Now and then, mistakes happen. Our contingency fund will allow us to recover in case any accidents happen or if we need any other things!
Distribution ($400): Leftover funds that are not used in the filmmaking process will be used to distribute our project to film festivals.
