The Story
PETER is a dark comedic romance about a successful but jaded woman who falls in love with an unhoused con-man, and must help him to fake his own death to feel alive again and ultimately get true love.
It is a film about life in Los Angeles. From glamorous L.A. - where people feel isolated and jaded - it moves to a much grittier version of the city, with graffiti and street live, with protesters and community, where people feel alive and love/d. It is a call to embrace our shared humanity in an inhumane city.

WHY ME AND WHY NOW?
The story of PETER is inspired by my own life as a struggling artist in Los Angeles, constantly negotiating between going after her dreams and making enough money to pay the rent… and the car insurance, and health insurance... At its core, the topic of the film (for me) is capitalism and how it shapes people’s behavior. Quoting my friend Joel here: Peter is a film where “personalities collide in fun and awkward ways while navigating danger and the aftermath of violence that is dramatically consequential.” It's a timely story set in contemporary Los Angeles, filmed where I lived (until recently) and on locations I used to frequent. Everything in this film is very personal to me. And the core conflict is inspired by my last relationship, which started on a dating app.
SYNOPSIS
Jackie and Peter meet on a dating app, fall in love, but Peter has a dark secret, he’s unhoused, momentarily. But as an unflinching optimist, he sees it only as a short stint before he’ll get back on his feet. Things get more complicated when Jackie finds out and reels between feeling betrayed and trying to “fix" Peter. None of that is what he wants. Stakes rise, as Peter’s former evil business partner sends a hit woman to kill Peter and his eco project. Jackie, Peter, and the hit woman must come together to save their lives, “the world”, and to get the love they deserve.
PRODUCTION NOTES AND TIMELINE
PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHY - ACCOMPLISHED ✅
Entirely shot with an iPhone 16 and little more than available light, our production is truly independent. I developed the script over two years. For the final version, Jon Stout joined me as a co-writer. Both of us have studied with Joan Scheckel, and therefore have a common understanding and tools to work with. Jon transitioned to being the cinematographer for the project, while I was excited to get to direct my first narrative feature film!
Our film crew never exceed 5 people, which facilitated shooting in streets and parks, without permits, and in many other “stolen” locations. True Guerilla-style, we used what we found, could repurpose, or were gifted by the kind and generous people who supported us along the way with locations (hair salon, mansion, coffee shop) and other essentials. Peter’s story is, after all, that of an unhoused person making do with what he finds. Our style of production mirrored exactly that spirit.

Skilled in editing from my documentary work, I am currently assembling a rough cut that will later be polished by another professional editor. To get to the end of our journey - and for PETER to screen in a theater and/or at a film festival - we need to accomplish the following:

Alexa Oona Schulz
WRITER, DIRECTOR, and PRODUCER
Alexa expressed an early interest in the dramatic arts by writing love intrigues and producing space travel audio plays that involved her and her best friend's large family of Barbie dolls. She also enjoyed directing her friends in Dracula scenes on the community lawn in her early teens.
Today, Alexa writes and directs for film, TV, and new media.
Her credits include prime time, female-centric drama, as well as crime teleplays for German broadcaster ZDF. Alexa has written and produced television programs in a variety of entertainment formats for broadcasters ARTE, ARD, VOX, and Kabel 1, and has written and directed TV-length documentaries for ARTE, ARD, and Canal+. In 2006 Alexa’s award-winning documentary feature début WEEKEND WARRIORS was theatrically released by one of the biggest multiplex cinemas in Germany. From 2010 to 2014 Alexa was the multimedia producer at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where she created more than 90 video episodes that were used across multiple platforms.
Alexa's multifaceted career has spanned multiple formats and countries, including film and theater work, documentary and fiction. A dual citizen US/Germany, Alexa works in German, English, and Spanish. She is member of the German Directors Association (BVR), and the Independen Writers Caucus (IWC).
Jon Stout
CO-WRITER and CINEMATOGRAPHER
Jon was thrilled to collaborate with Alexa on the screenplay for Peter and taking on the role of cinematographer seemed like a natural next step in exploring the world of this unexpected couple. The film is about characters living on the edge, and shooting a micro-budget project on a smartphone helped us to shoot quickly, focusing on capturing the performances and authentic locations across Los Angeles. Having a tiny crew allowed us to access locations, and get shots, that would have been impossible on a larger production. It was an amazing experience, capturing iconic locations and navigating the romantic journey of two folks who are both a terrible match, and perfectly compatible.
Jon Stout is an award-winning cinematographer and director. Founder of Eaten Alive Productions, he recently lit, directed and released a season of spooky webisodes, My Ghost Stories, is developing several feature projects and produces segments for KTLA’s annual Rose Parade broadcast. He has garnered a bundle of awards and worldwide screenings for his short projects. He has worked with human actors as well as puppets, and co-produced a visually stunning stop-motion animated short. As a writer and producer, he created a series of augmented reality mini-documentaries to promote Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, earning him a Clio Award and he was honored to work with Russell Carpenter (cinematographer of Titanic) to develop interactive, behind-the-scenes content for the American Society of Cinematographers web site. A graduate of UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television, he can often be found exploring crumbling alleys and scenic shores of Los Angeles.
Owen Dara
PETER
Owen Dara is an Irish-born, Los Angeles-based Singer/Songwriter, Comedian, and Filmmaker. His feature films have won numerous awards, and in 2020, four of his original songs made the Oscar list of just 75 songs in the running for an Academy Award for "Best Original Song". He has published a book and performed a one-man show based on his childhood. His CD "Moments I Keep" was released in 2021. He is currently performing live and working on films.
Owen: "I chose to play the role of Peter because he is a very interesting well-written character with many layers and a compelling secret. I had never seen a story like this before, and I knew it would be a challenging and interesting role to play."
Jackie Alixander
JACKIE
Jackie Alixander is an Aotearoa New Zealand–born, Los Angeles–based actor, writer, and producer. She trained at the London School of Drama and Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), and has been acting and teaching acting since an early age. In recent years, her creative focus has shifted toward writing and producing, with several projects currently in development. This broader perspective has informed her approach to acting, particularly within collaborative, independently produced films.
Jackie became involved with Peter through Filmmaking Lab Studios cohort generators and worked closely with the director during early development prior to production. Taking on the role of Jackie offered an opportunity to explore an unconventional love story and an emotional and physical journey toward intimacy and connection, approached as a fully embodied performance.
Jessica Lancaster
MAX and STUNT COORDINATOR
Jessica Lancaster is an award-winning actress with a BFA from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She has performed in professional theaters across the United States, including notable roles such as Katherine in Proof at Cincinnati Playhouse and Irina in Three Sisters at Swine Palace.
Some of her television credits include Law & Order: SVU, Medium, CSI, The Rookie, and The Forgotten, as well as a recent supporting role in a Lifetime original film.
Currently based in Los Angeles, Jessica is also an accomplished producer. She has produced and starred in three award-winning feature films, including A Lesser Gift, which is currently on the festival circuit. Most recently, she won Best Actress in a Feature at the Austin Revolution Film Festival.
Jessica is excited to play Max in Peter, a role she feels deeply connected to, drawn to the character’s rebellious nature and strong social conscience.
Tia Matza
KIMBERLEE and ASSOCIATE PRODUCER
Tia Matza is an actor, writer, and director based in Los Angeles, California. With over 20 years of experience across television, film, and theater, she began training in acting, dance, and filmmaking at an early age.
Tia has written, directed, produced, and acted in two short films. Hang Him, a two-minute Super 8 film, was selected for LA SuperShorts and four additional festivals in 2025, earning her the Tarkovsky Grant. Her second short, No More I Love You’s, began as a two-week filmmaking challenge, was later re-edited, and is currently preparing for the festival circuit. The film draws inspiration from Fellini’s La Strada.
She has written three feature-length screenplays that have been recognized and awarded by multiple festivals and competitions, including the Coverfly Red List and Stage 32’s Double Recommend designation.
In addition to narrative filmmaking, Tia creates interdisciplinary work that blends live aerial dance, film, and storytelling, often incorporating surreal imagery. Her live performance work has been presented at TEDx, the LA Women’s Theatre Festival, and other venues.
Tia has been part of an ongoing artist cohort and filmmaking training program with the Joan Scheckel Filmmaking Labs since 2013.

The story offers witty humor and a window into the struggles of modern romance. It’s tough out there, and Alexa married late-stage capitalism with falling in love in a way I have never seen before. Phil Bartolf
LUTHER (the evil capitalist)
Phil is a trained Shakespeare actor, and the director of the Theater Palisades which, about a year ago, was consumed by the L.A. fires and is now being rebuild.
Phil and Alexa both study the Alexander Technique with Michael Frederick at Baron Brown Studio in Santa Monica. Before Phil started his acting career, he was an "evil capitalist" working and living in New York City. Playing Luther was a natural fit for him.

SCARLET (Peter’s unhoused neighbor)
Eileen Dietz was born in New York City along with a twin sister, named Marianne. While Eileen went on to be an actress Marianne lives in Florida and has 3 terrific children. Eileen has been lucky to be involved with many award-winning projects. She was in the original Tony winning Steambath with Tony Perkins and went on to portray the Demon who possesses Regan in The Exorcist, following that was the Emmy-winning General Hospital where she portrayed Sarah, a patient in a mental hospital in Port Charles, and also the Emmy-winning Helter-Skelter where she was one of the Manson Gang. While these are the award-winning projects, Eileen has been blessed to continue working on many other projects.

She was in the original Tony winning Steambath with Tony Perkins and went on to portray the Demon who possesses Regan in The Exorcist, following that was the Emmy-winning General Hospital where she portrayed Sarah, a patient in a mental hospital in Port Charles, and also the Emmy-winning Helter-Skelter where she was one of the Manson Gang. While these are the award-winning projects, Eileen has been blessed to continue working on many other projects.
