Mission Statement

Our film captures the epitome of childhood. In Peter and Kitty, we see challenges every person has faced: losing your innocence and accepting the reality of growing up. The nature of this project rests in our own nostalgia, and we aim to open a time capsule of memories for all ages to reflect upon.

The Story

When asked to reflect on childhood innocence, every person thinks about a different core memory. Losing your first tooth, riding a bike for the first time, misplacing your favorite toy... Maybe you think of somber memories, like when your parents told you who Santa is, explained their divorce, or shared the news of an ill family member.

These are often memories that explain the tipping point into adulthood. Some kids grow up faster than others, some in deeper ways, but we all grow up. It’s a fact of life. And as we grow up, it's hard to let go of our younger selves–a version we often look back on with such fondness.

Peter and Kitty encapsulates a moment from every person’s childhood–one that, whether you realized at the time or not, stuck with your younger self.

Remember the friend you met at summer camp, on holiday, or on a field trip?

Whether the friendship was fleeting or long-lasting, these childhood connections often stood out in our lives. Our film highlights the theme of childhood innocence in a way that invites reflection through these special connections. What sets our story apart from a familiar “coming-of-age” story is the use of evaporating memories—fantasy disrupted by a complex, messy reality that Peter and Kitty don’t yet understand. As difficult home lives and external trauma threaten the utopia of summer camp for Peter, we dive into an intimate experience in which he forgets about the complexities he cannot yet understand.

With deep roots of summer camp memories, this story comes from a place of reminiscence, set in a place that multiple generations call "home". Our producer, Alexis Kuncar, grew up within a community at the same summer camp her father attended throughout his youth. Our director, Ralph Hutchins, also has fond memories of lakeside banter and lifelong friendships formed during childhood summers. These experiences, along with continuous work in youth programs, gave both creators the confidence to replicate this magical energy in Peter & Kitty.

Creating an environment that feels authentic to summer camp can only be made possible through the use of practical locations–specifically, Producer Alexis's childhood camp: Camp St. Nicholas in Frazier Park, CA. We find that this space encapsulates childhood and what it means to experience youth in the most liberated capacity. With successful crowdfunding, we are confident in using this location to bring the summer camp experience to the screen, allowing Peter and Kitty to feel the same familiar nostalgia and forget their problems.

In addition to funding the location itself, we are seeking sufficient funds to cover our travel needs to and from the camp. As our crew consists entirely of students from Chapman University, we have budgeted for our team's travel and lodging over the course of the six-day shoot to ensure safety and comfort.

Casting is essential to the success of our project, and it has remained a top priority to find talented youth who can embody the authenticity of Peter and Kitty. Through the process of street casting kids from the greater Los Angeles area, we have budgeted for rehearsals, necessary lodging, and a studio teacher. With your help, we will be able to tell our story in the most true form possible: through the lens of children's genuine experience. Dust in your nose, children giggling, water splashing. The basis of childhood memories are built upon nostalgic scents, sounds, and places in our mind, whether imaginative or reality. Whether you grew up in the mountains, at the lake, or as a Girl Scout, we all hold onto the visuals and sounds that bring us back to those places.

The use of state-of-the-art sound, camera, and lighting equipment is expensive. However, our cinematography, audio, and editing team is extremely experienced and excited to use the best resources available to execute our vision. With the help of funding, we will be able to secure the necessary equipment needed to showcase our location, cast, and story in the most immersive form possible.

Our story examines the essence of childhood innocence and all that comes with it. With your support, we aim to connect audiences through shared experiences and encourage everyone to embrace warm nostalgia and its impact on the future.
