Story
Mission Statement
As an American-Brazilian filmmaker in NY, I was always surrounded by diverse people. The production will have a cast & crew mostly of women and people of color. Phosphene will include people of varying races, religions, and identities on set, a structure that allows a vast flow of new ideas.About The Project
Welcome to Phosphene, kool kid.
Phosphenes are those lights and colors produced by rubbing your eyes.
The basis of the film can be broken down to one simple and clean theme; connecting with someone is the best way to cure loneliness and an unhealthy addiction. The film explores Bernardo, a homeless musician addicted to cocaine. Almost magically, Bernardo materializes a flame from his fingertip every time he takes a hit. A flame he stares into for hours at a time, usually in a dark space. On the other end is office worker Susan. With an aversion to social disagreements, she relies on prescription drugs as a way to cope with her anxieties. As a former painter she always sketches and tries to illustrate the perfect picture but can never quite get there. Eventually the two connect at a party, as music and visuals fire on all cylinders, their artistry merges into one trippy ride.
The film is going to ooze style. Not too much ooze. Because that would be messy.
The origin of this film came from an anime called Charlotte. What a nerd, pfft. The show’s premise centered around kids with superpowers, of course, but they came with a drawback; like an invisible girl could only appear invisible to one person at a time, whereas everyone else can see her. I thought the idea was really cool. I spoke to some homies about it while we were shooting a feature film and they loved the idea. So I ran with it for a few months, doing the occasional script read and making revisions. After that, it expanded to a pseudo-documentary examining these "victims" as their superpowers created a lot of personal problems, like an addiction would. Difficulty talking to people, isolation from family and friends, and that kind of hollow feeling you get when you know you're doing something habitually wrong. It would have utilized interview-style sit-downs attempting to ground the powers akin to diseases. From then, the toiling of the script continued until it became Phosphene, a tale about two struggling artists.
With the DNA of the 90s urban environment, chill hop, nerdiness and anime, Phosphene is a pretty unique beast. It’s literally about the lead-up of two persons meeting at a party. But the style of their world is dipped in neon, VHS static, voyeurism, skater culture, drugs, and office work. Phosphene is a vertical slice of these two artists meeting, surrounded by the trippy visuals they see and hear.
I also wanted to highlight where the finance is going. On a serious level, we need to pay these talented people for giving up their time and energy for Phosphene. They're working on an extremely shoe-string button as is so we're really trying to shoot past $4381.
Look, I know there’s a team section but I wanted to quickly highlight something. These are the AWESOME folks joining me on this adventure. All of them have decided to join this crazy adventure, so I wanted to give them a special visual shoutout so that you guys could enjoy.
More info on these bangin' folks at the end.
That’s you! You're a kool kid! I’ve been saying that all along! Haven’t you been reading? It’s okay, I forgive you. And if you have been reading, you’re not only a kool kid. You’re a radical kool kid. But you know what’s better then that, you ask? Being a contributor. Even with its small and intimate settings, the quality within each frame is going to be massive. No doubt, we’re gonna put in work for this project so we’re going to need the support from all of you kool kids along the way. That support can come through multiple avenues, but sharing the project will really help get us far. Contributing would be terrific but spreading the word and being a champion for this project would be hella cool and exactly what we need to deliver the best quality film. Phosphene is a passion project, and its made from the backs of artists who strive everyday, like our characters, to find their niche and achieve their goals. You can help do that! So, don't hesitate to give this project a shout on your Internet social spaces!
As the theme rings, connecting with something creative and channeling your insecurities and day-to-day disgruntles is a special power we humans have. It's very easy to close off from the world if we don't take advantage of that ability. But, sometimes you gotta rub your eyes for you to open them. Here are ways to join us in this krazy trip:
- Click the FOLLOW button on our page. It makes sure the page stays in the consciousness of anyone willing to listen!
- Share, share, share! Please share our page to your social media platforms. Tell your krazy friend, your parents, your co-workers, your neighbors, or anyone who might be interested in a trippy nerdy short!
- Contribute financially to the campaign, any amount would be radical.
Thank you so much and enjoy blurbs from the cast and crew and concept storyboards!
