Mission Statement

As someone who is a seasonal and avid Gilmore Girls watcher, I longed to have representation of mother/daughter dynamics, specifically Black mother/daugter dynamics. For me, it’s important that Black women and girls see themselves represented on the screen.

The Story

LOGLINE:

A thirty-something Black single mother navigates the challenges of raising two teenage daughters in Chicago, IL.

Carrie Harris, a thirty-two-year-old single Black mother raises her teenage daughters, Chris and Mickey, who are respectively freshman and juniors in high school, as they all naiviagte hopes, dreams and success while navigating familial challenges, particulary Carrie's fraught and tumultuous relationship with her mother, Donna, who is brought back into Carrie's life when she begins paying for Carrie's nursing school tuition.

Why Picture Perfect?

Growing up, I saw an abundance of television shows that featured Black female leads: That’s So Raven, True Jackson, V.P., One on One, Half & Half, Girlfriends, and so many more.

As I got older, the number started to dwindle. Black female representation became less diverse, and our cries for more monoracial, darker skinned and body representation were ignored. As someone who’s a part of this population, I vowed to become a part of this change.

Picture Perfect is a story based on my growing up in Chicago, and being raised by a single mom and older sister. I was always inspired to tell this story, especially after discovering Gilmore Girls in my teen years.

More importantly, I wanted to create a television show that showcased the Black family in a way that I felt had never been done before. One that explored family dynamics, how generational trauma affects everyone from the matriarch to the grand children, but Black girl joy as well; it’s sorely needed, especially in today’s climate. ’ve always wanted to do a coming of age story: The awkward feelings of first crushes, embarrassing moments, first kisses, dances, and the angst of being a teenager.

For me, Picture Perfect is more than a passion project: it’s my baby. Getting to tell and create the stories that I’ve longed for so long is a dream of mine and finally getting the opportunity to do just that makes me that more excited to inspire and make a whole new generation of Black kids laugh is one of my greatest joue with this series.

Context:

Currently in pre-production and finishing up our casting process, we have a fully written script, and we are selecting or crew. Our goal of $3,000 will go towards paying our cast and crew, because I believe that all artists should be compensated for their work and talent. Funding will also go towards providing meals for our cast and crew, wardrobe for our actors, as well as locations and camera equipment. In addition, it will go towards post production: editing, color grading, and a screening of the film. My strech goal for this project would be $5,000.

About This Team

I wrote the pilot three years ago during my first year of grad school, and I always thought that I would film this later on in life with a popular network. It wasn’t until one of my dad’s friends, Simeon read the pilot and told me that I needed to make this immediately! That was all the convincing that I needed, and he has been there with me every step of the way throughout the casting and pre-production process.
